Evacuating New Orleans in a couple of hours :( / Evacuated, in MS now

Making some final preparations around the house and we'll be heading out in a couple of hours. Hopefully we'll be coming home soon... I can't take another 'Katrina' scenario where I'm gone from home for a month. We had some roof damage for K, but didn't flood. I pray to God that we're as fortunate this time.

Gustav's coming for that ass! Tbh, I feel like I'm sort of to blame. I jokingly cast a spell to redirect Gustav about a week ago. And it worked. A little... too... well. Category 5 well, it's looking like. Brutal. XD

Man, that sucks. God must really hate Jazz, huh?

Hope everything and everyone makes it out as undamaged as possible. <3

Hey Rob ~ I hope all the best for you and your home/family/friends.

My husband is the video producer for the local news in Lafayette and he will actually have to be out in the hurricane filming. Yeah, I'm not too thrilled. He has to stay at the station for the entire duration of the hurricane. We are just outside of the area where they are having mandatory evacuation so I don't want to take any chances. Tomorrow morning me and my son are going to go to a relative's house in northern Louisiana. We've taped up all of our windows today and got sandbags from the city to put by our door. It didn't sink in until today that this is really happening.

When we get back I hope we have a house and a neighborhood. I'm worried about the two large Oaks in my backyard too. One is next to our neighbor's house and the other one is right next to mine. Gulp. :(

Good luck bro. Hope all is well. Damn George Bush. He just had to manufacture 1 more hurricane and send it toward New Orleans before he left office.

Thanks everyone. We're in Mississippi now at my sis-in-law's house. We'll be leaving here at 9 am tomorrow to head to either Tenn or Georgia. They're saying NOLA's going to get hit hard, maybe harder than Katrina. If it continues on to where they're saying - Houma, LA - man, that will be incredibly bad for them. (If anyone is interested, you can watch live news feed out of NOLA at )

K, we've got 2 big Oaks in the front yard and a big Magnolia in the back. I'm worried about those, too. Best of luck and prayers to you as well.

I'll keep you all posted. (I've done a little nervous eating today... guess it's understandable under the circumstances :willy_nilly:)

My thoughts are with you! My step sister lives in Slidell, so she is leaving to go stay at her grandmothers. Try to update us!

The news here is saying it's a cat 3 at this point, and the eye wall is close to making landfall west of New Orleans. Doesn't look good for the people in its path, but I'm hoping it won't be as bad as Katrina. A friend of mine is riding out the storm in Lafayette; he's armed to the teeth and well stocked up.

Here in Dallas we're welcoming tens of thousands of hurricane refugees again; I hear it's not as many as 3 years ago.

Rob, I hope you get to go home really soon; New Orleans is a really special place.

Looking at the forecasts on GMA it looks like New Orleans will not be getting the worst of this hurricane. Fingers crossed!

So far so good for us and for the levees in New Orleans. I'm ready to go home! There's nearly 500,000 without power in S.E. LA and I'm one of them. I hope it doesn't take 3-4 weeks to restore power like after Katrina. Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. I'll continue to keep you posted...

Hey, Rob, I was thinking about you today while listening to the reports from NO. They were saying that the levees were maxed out and it was considered a cat2. Doesn't sound good from up this way. What ellivation are you? There was one area that the water was up to 16 ft. That's tough. Let us know when you get home and that it's all ok.

Yeah, the levees had all they could handle, it was a Cat 3 right before landfall and dropped to a Cat 2 right as it hit the coast. Storm surge was probably what you heard at 16 feet, but that was probably right at the eye, which did not hit New Orleans, it hit about 75 miles west of NO and that's good. There hasn't been much if any flooding that I'm aware of this time. They've done a lot of repairs and upgrades to the levees since Katrina. My brother-in-law is a policeman that had to stay behind and he's been to my house and everything is fine, no damage. That's about all I've got for now. I'll keep updating as I know more.

That's great news about your house! Hope you get to go home soon.

I'm home... sort of. I'm back in NOLA, but the power is still out at my house. We're spending the night at a relative's house who is lucky enough to have power. Hopefully the power company will have the power lines on my block fixed tomorrow. There are tree limbs down all over the place... got a lot of yard work to do. It's been impossible to eat right the past few days let alone exercise. I'm ready to get back in the swing of things. Thanks again for all the well wishes.

My house finally has power!!!!! Hopefully I won't have to evac for Ike...

I hope you don't have to either, that would suck!

Glad to hear you're back home safe and NOLA wasn't swept away!
