I play soccer and burn lots of energy sprinting around. I play twice a week and work out toning another 2 days a week. I also work really long hours.

While I am quite fit and have my body working and looking the way I like, I hate the way I feel the morning after I play. I'm alwasy so fatigued and I honestly cant afford to spend the morning struggling to focus and get on it.

I need a supplement thats not going to bulk me up, but give my muscles the energy they need to recover quickly.

Please give me suggestions, I'm hesitant to use supplements as i've heard some horror stories.

I don't believe you need any supplements. Can you give us an idea of what you eat during the days (for meals and snacks)? What do you eat after working out?

Coffee works for me.

Hey guys

I do drink coffee, but its short term solution.

I eat really well actually. I normally have most of my carbs in the afternoon, so at football i burn most of it up. I do have snack. an hour or so before I play, like sandwich. I eat muesli for breakfast and have those Granola bars to snack on most days (They Rock). On days I train I try to eat Carbs for dinner as well to replenish the energy, but I still wake up feeling tired.

I eat lots of protein at dinner mainly.

thanks for the quick responses, I really need a solution

Caffiene can have more of an effect then you think. It can often upset your system for days. Some people can do fine with this, it doesn't affect them or they are used to it and drink/take caffiene everyday but many cannot and will have a coffee one day, then feel groggy for anything up to 3 days following.

Are you also sure your sleeping well? I read something about sleep cycles, we have two or three or even more per night, you wake up halfway through one and your left feeling unrefreshed and tierd but wake up at the right side of one and your fine, even without enough hours to rest properly (though you cannot do that every day or it will catch up with you). Also worth remembering that if you have upped your exercise or have more stress around at the moment, you may find your sleeping is lighter/not as refreshing (your body will alter, it just takes time) or you may even require more sleep.

I had a similar situation last Fall, and a personal trainer recommended that I eat 1 cup of cottage cheese before bed. I woke up the next morning NOT starving, feeling ready for my morning cardio, and I had the strength to finish well. I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but you can try it. Throw some fresh fruit into it if you don't like cottage cheese on its own.

If you want a supplement that will help you post-workout, you could try Glutamine, it's relatively tasteless, and you can throw it into a drink after your games and practices to help repair the damage.
