Endurance

Sorry, I didn't know where else to post this, but I figured the Running forum was as good a place as any...

I'm really out of shape. I mean I'm 21, 6'2" and 283lbs out of shape (I have a big frame so I'm not round or anything, but I still have a lot of meat on me). I haven't really worked out in over three years now and it's been even longer since I was in any sort of good cardiovascular shape. I used to be able to do 65 mile bike rides in under 5 hours, but now I'm lucky to be able to jog an eighth of a mile.

Anyway, I'm going to be starting a weight loss routine in a week or two and I need some advice on the cardio part. When I jog or run, I lose my breath very, very quickly. It's not even a matter of my legs getting tired too quickly, I just run out of breath before they start to feel any burn. So since I really am in such bad shape, what would you guys suggest for me? I mean I need something that will get my lungs back into performing mode so I can hit the ground running with this weight loss regimen.

Just keep pushing yourself man! (And smoking doesn't help if you're doing that!) If you want, you can calculate your vo2max , I find it inspiring to see improvements such as that one, and if you run and run hard you will see it improve. a lot is determined by genes but with hard work anything is possible :)

Maybe you can start running 5 km at a very slow pace and gradually increase the speed? Remember to never increase distance and speed at the same time though, and never increase distance more than 10% pr. week when you feel comfortable with the 5 km run.

Also watch out for pains, especially in your lower legs around the shins! They will stop you running for quite some time (like me )

Just remember, a lot in running is also mental endurance so just keep pushing yourself! :D

I had the same problem a couple years ago. I began running/jogging when really I had never done any running or jogging at all in my entire life. I had biked, played football, etc but really had not run more than half a mile.

When I started running, I Just ran out of breath and had to slow down and walk. Then start running again. This didnt work for me until I did a couple things:

1) Take shorter steps. No need to raise your knee way up. Just lift your feet high enough to clear the ground/object. Make the step shorter than you would if you were running. Focus on keeping the steps short. You can always elongate the steps later on as you begin pushing yourself.
2) Listen to music. No need to hear yourself panting; that always annoyed me and the music helps to give you a rhythm to run to, depending on the music choice of course.
3) You will run out of breath now and then at first. Just walk a bit and start off again. If you heed step #1 above, you're less likely to run out of breath. Its just about training the lungs/body to get used to the act of running. It WILL get easy and you'll find yourself getting second-winds and not thinking about it at all eventually.

don't get discouraged. everyone needs to start somewhere. Just take it slow and build yourself up a little at a time. running is a great way to lose weight and be healthy. i wish you luck!!!
