Ok, so in an effort to get more protein into my diet, I boiled up a bunch of eggs (had one w/ breakfast w/ spinach and tomato...delish!)

However: My husband grabbed one too and then I got to thinking, he's has high cholesterol. Should he be eating the eggs?

Eggs are a pretty perfect protein source and whole food, but if your husband has high cholesterol and you are weight-conscious, you could buy egg whites instead and both reap the benefits. A carton of egg whites is convenient, and inexpensive compared to eggs, too.

The whole egg/cholesterol thing has been somewhat debunked. New research shows that there is much less of a connection between dietary cholesterol and blood/serum cholesterol than was previously thought.

Eating eggs if you have high cholesterol is no longer contra-indicated, for the most part. In fact you're better off eating eggs than you are eating any kind of red meat, in that situation - because the fats in meat will affect your cholesterol levels more than anything in the egg.

As someone else mentioned above, however, if you're really concerned, you (your husband, whoever) can just eat the whites and not the yolks, although by doing so, you're removing 1/2 the protein and a most of the other nutrients from the egg.

^^ this.

High cholesterol is moreso a byproduct of a diet high in sat and trans fats. so pastries, butter, margarine, fatty cuts of meat like bacon, steak, ground beef, etc. While at the same time neglecting foods that are rich in unsat sources like omega 3 fatty fish, nuts, and good oils like olive oil.

I also recall reading that further compounding the problem is insulin sensitive foods like sugars, white foods like breads, pastas and rice. But I can't say for sure, so take this one with a grain of salt.

Long story short, eggs are fine. The rest of his diet is what you moreso should be looking at. If you're still that concerned, just buy the whites.

I cook a diet of mostly vegetarian foods, not that some bad things don't sneek in but not often. He has a family history of high cholesterol too. He has been taking cinnamon pills to try to lower it, he also takes fish oil daily. The dr. wants him to take medication for high cholesterol but the side effects are nasty on those things, so we're trying to correct the situation through diet and exercise. I talked him into the boiled egg yesterday and he said he felt great, usually he just eats one shredded wheat bisquett w/ blueberries and skim milk (trying to get him to at least remember to sprinkle the ground flaxseed on it..oye!)

Does your husband exercise at all? Exercise has been shown to reduce cholesterol significantly.

Even just getting out and walking would help a lot.
