eating what you want and running

i am always reading that if you work out alot running alot ect you can pretty much get away with eating what you like and still lose/maintain weight? is this true?

just before anyone starts responding with sarcasim this is a question not a statement.

I would have to call foul on that ball. It's true that more exercise does allow for more wiggle room as far as calories go, but not so much with the nutrient breakdown. You need protein to build/repair muscles and smart carb choices as basic fuel, plus a correct amount of healthy fats for skin and brain health. If you are eating tons of unhealthy fats - or even too much of the healthy stuff - and tons of starches, but not getting enough protein and veggies, then you are going to pay for it. So no, not whatever you want, but maybe as much as you want of the right things.

I agree. More of the right things will fuel the fun of running even more. Extra of the bad things just makes you mark time with the sport and makes you feel lousy. Especially the older you get.

Bill Phillips puts is quite elegantly - "Is it true that if you exercize a lot it doesnt matter what you eat? NO, if you exercize a lot it it matters EVEN MORE what you eat.

Some people with great metabolisms can get away with eating crap and not get fat, even if they don't exercise.
So, sure, a small minority of lucky bastards can certainly 'eat whatever' and 'run it off'...but the majority of us cannot. Case in point...the fact that America is 60% obese now, and we have one of the world's worst set of eating habits.

i guess im asing because i dont eat unhealthy but i a not on a diet either,im eating good food and a few naught things every now and then, quite balanced.

I used to believe this to be true until I cut out some really nasty things and saw big changes.
I've been running for about 5 years...except during pregnancy. I really became serious about it in the past 8 months. Six weeks ago, my husband and I decided to try and drop a few lbs for a trip that we are heading out for tomorrow. We cut out soda and fast food and just tried to be more careful about what we eat. I lost only 4 lbs, but my abs, butt, and thighs trimmed up significantly. My little low ab bulge, the result of 2 c-sections is finally flattened out again. I definately attribute it to cutting out crap that I thought was okay because I had been working so hard. I'm really seeing more muscle definition...what was under that layer of fast food induced fat!
I will add that I do reward myself quite a bit. We will do a Sonic ice cream snack a few evenings a week...just not all of the fried stuff that I had been eating.
It was just a little expirament for our vacation, but I think it will become a way of life for us. My husband has lost a lot of fat around his belly and butt. He just started back up working out, though. Men always seem to lose it faster!
