Eating right(what foods to eat)

I know many of you have heard people ask this question plenty of times, but this is my first time here in this forum and I read some of the posts. There are a lot of people who know what they are saying, and some who don't. But to the majority of people who do, I have a question on eating right.

I have been working out for about 3 years, on and off. I am going to be serious about it this time. My problem is that I don't think I have been eating right. I mean, I bought some whey protein and eat rice, eggs, salad, and chicken but I wanna gain some muscle and get toned at the same time.....I want definition in my body and I haven't been able to get it. I run a lot and I read somewhere in this forum about HIIT. I'm going to try that, but I don't wanna be burning off my muscles. I wanna burn off the fat. I hope this HIIT will work.

Anyways........I'm not sure the food I'm eating is helping me any. I eat good healthy food, but when I go to the gym and workout I really don't see great resultls. Maybe its not the food I eat but the workouts I do.(ill post a question on working out later, but for now I want to focus on the food groups)

Can any expert...or knowledgeable person tell me exactly what foods I need to eat....

1.)Before a workout.
2.)After a workout(protein supplements, vitamins, etc)
3.) What foods to eat when I'm not working out.

A list of foods for eeach of the three numbers would help me out a lot.
I want to start off fresh and eat what I'm supposed to eat not what I think I should eat.

Another comment is that I work 2nd shift from 3:30 to 11:30pm so I don't have a regular schedule as other people do......will that affect my metabalism any. I usually go to the gym around 11am or 12pm. My job consists of standing the whole time so I'm sure my workout and eating habits are going to be different then most other people because of my job hours. Of maybe not.

Ok, it's hard to address something like this because you have to eat foods that you like, otherwise you won't stick with it.
If you are looking to put on some bulk, the HIIT is a great for not having your cardio burn of your muscle. Have you heard a lot about the Atkins 'diet'? (sorry for those who are used to reading my posts - i can't help it ... i think it works). I generally stay away from carbs after 4:00pm. But, you need carbs in your diet for energy, so I start the day with a nice bowl of oatmeal to get me through my workout. After any workout, I always have a protein shake (w/ soy milk and high protein, low carb powder - sometimes a banana for that extra flavour). During the day, I usually have a bowl of yogurt with a scoup or two of protein powder ... it's great because the powder mixes seamlessly into most types of yogurt. As for the rest of your day, it's a balance between the types of foods you like and what you believe works best for you.

the problem with eating foods that i like is that I'm not sure they are helping me in building muscle. I like rice a lot, and it eat before a workout, cause I need carbs to give me that energy to workout. I like eating pasta, I love eggs, but should I throw out the yoke. I usually boil them. No never heard of the atkins diet. Can you explanit it to me or give me a site to read.

Carbs give you teh energy you need for workout, right?? If so, should I eat some pasta before a workout(since its filled with carbs)
My day consists of waking up at 11:30am, eating some pasta. I don't have any oatmeal (I plan on buying it though) with some lettuce and tomatoes and waiting about 40 min for it to digest. Then go to work out. After workout I eat my whey protein shake and thats it, sometimes I eat a small chicken or ham sandwich after the protein shake. At work I eat at about 6:50 and it consists of the more pasta(I made some the day before so I can eat it at work and before I hit the gym.)If not pasta, sometimes I eat those lean cusine microwavable foods. Its healthy from what I read. After work I get a little hungry so I eat some cereal, then hit the sack. I do it all over again the next morning.

How does that sound?? What am I doing wrong or right?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

the old fashioned stuff is pretty good, if you have a crock pot heres a pretty good recipe off of food network

Recipe Summary
Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 9 hours
Yield: 4 servings
1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup dried figs
4 cups water
1/2 cup half-and-half

In a crock-pot, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours.
Stir and remove to serving bowls. This method works best if started before you go to bed. This way your oatmeal will be finished by morning.

what should I eat, in the morning before I go workout. I workout at 12pm. What should I eat after my workout, besides my whey protein shake???

thanks

Hey just a quick question. Whats the difference between the instant oatmeal and the kind that takes a while to cook (besides the obvious cooking time)? Is there a nutritional difference?
