Eating out of BOREDOM

Hi all,

I am 58, a widow and need to lose weight. I have been heavy all my life. I got to be happy with myself before I can make anyone else happy. My husband died in 2004 and I have wanted to start dating again. 11 years is a good long time to wait. I waited because it wouldn't make me happy. Losing weight would make me happy. These diets, too expensive. Can I just cut down on everything? I just do not have the money to buy all the "correct" foods to eat. I am on disability and you know, I only get paid once a month so after 2 weeks I am broke. Fruits do not last a whole month or is there some kind that does? The main reason I eat is out of boredom. Nothing to do during the day but sit in front of the computer which is also in front of the TV. I am getting lazier by the minute. Also not liking the place I live does not help. I do not even want or get dressed during the day! I need a change!

Thanks,
Me123

You don't need to spend a lot of money to get fit and healthy. I started by making small changes. Go for a walk, read about fitness on the computer, try one new habit at a time - I started with replacing one high calorie drink a day with water. Frozen and canned foods are a good option that last longer than fresh ones. Make behavioural goals instead of outcome goals (I will shower every day and get dressed vs I will loose x pounds). You can do it!

I spend my waking hours till my sleeping hours on the computer on Facebook but lately been looking stuff up. The only 2 things I drink are coffee and water and the coffee has presweetner in it. Thanks for the reply. Believe me it is much easier when you are talking with someone with the same goal.

Good luck to you,

The best approach to starting weight loss is looking in the fresh foods/fruits aisle at your grocers. Even if you are eating out of boredom the first step is to have a positive balanced nutrition plan, so when you do eat you are eating beneficial nutrients. Focus on foods that boost your metabolism.

The other aspect that will help is start something that gives you an awesome excuse to get up and go everyday...don't limit yourself you can do anything!

Hi- Are there any food banks (thru a church of a local group)? Many of these places have fresh food that can no longer be sold because they are expiring soon. One way to help get out of the house and obtain fresh good food is to volunteer at one of these places. You get to socialize, do something good for others and be able to obtain some extra good food to make your budget stretch.

Hi Me123

Don't be too hard on yourself, you've made the decision to make some changes and that's a pretty important part of the process.
Weight loss and improving your life doesn't have to be expensive or tricky, but it does have to be a very conscious effort, especially in the beginning.

I know what you mean about the cost of fresh fruit and the issue of it not lasting! My advice in the first instance is to set a weekly budget - that way you eliminate the opportunity to go broke at the end of the month. What about making some smoothies then freezing them? That way you'd be getting the good stuff and it won't be going off. Vegetables tend to last a bit longer than fruit and are much cheaper...use them to make soups (which can be frozen) or have it prepared and available to pick on throughout the day?

It's all about the small changes to your current lifestyle. Slowly but surely they will become second nature and you will be getting into better shape.
You are in the right place for encouragement, advice and motivation :)

OK people, this is what I did. You may not like it but when one does not have but 75.00 a month for groceries it is tough. All I eat now is at 7am, a bagel and my coffee,. (Don't take my coffee from me) and then nothing till 5:30pm when I either have a piece of chicken and a yogurt or another kind of meat and a vegetable. Then no more for the day.

Sometimes if I get hungry around noon, I will have a yogurt.

All good ideas you gave but I do not have the money to make smoothies and also when I go to the church (food bank(, the produce items are on last legs but once in a while they have apples and they stay longer.

Thanks for all the help and idea but with 75.00 a month......Enough said.

I budget around 20-25 a week for my food shop, so I know that it is entirely possible to eat well for less. It's just about being careful, meal planning, searching for cheap recipes etc. It's certainly not impossible, though I admit it's difficult at times.

If fruit is too expensive, try veg. That is cheaper and you can have lots of heartwarming soups :)
Please don't be disheartened. You asked for advice and it was given as best it could be, people on here really do want to encourage and motivate :)

Maybe start a thread asking for cheap recipes if your struggling. I'm sure there are many people here who could give some input.

Glucomannan is a water-soluble polysaccharide that is considered a dietary fiber. It is a hemicellulose component in the cell walls of some plant species. Glucomannan is a food additive used as an emulsifier and thickener.

3 grams needed of glucomannan, the Japanese grown and harvested Amorphophallus konjac root that actively contributes to a natural progressive weight loss whilst of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and varied diet.

Glucomannan can be found in a product that my company sell and promote.
This product is a healthy choco crunch bar.

ok, here is what I did. I cut way back on what I eat! People do not believe me and they still mention something that has to be bought. I watch all these shows on TV with overweight people and with talking to myself, I want to lose weight so I am. 6 lbs in 1 week or 10 days. By the way, 20-25 dollars a week for grocericies, I cannot do. I spent 80.00 this month for groceries.
