Sport Eating Late - How bad is it?

Sport Fitness
I'm currently a Grad student, and am on a very late schedule.
I usually start class or work around mid to late-morning, and often don't find myself getting home until 9 or 10 at night.

As a result, I find myself having dinner, or at least a mini-meal when I get home. I have heard that it is generally not recommended to eat that late at night and I was wondering how much of a detriment it might be to me.

I have been trying to eat more smaller meals, with healthy snacks in-between. My diet consists of a lot of breakfast food (cereal, eggs, whole wheat breads, bagels), sandwiches (PB&J, Lunch Meat), pasta, chicken, and other good carbs and protein, along with the occasional not-so good meal: Burger, pizza, etc. (I've been working on it, really!)

Any other tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

As long as it fits into your calorie requirements, you can eat at anytime.

The whole train of thought that "you shouldn't eat past 8" is a myth. You can even eat carbs, if its around your workout, with no problems. I try to sleep as late as possible on the weekends like 9-10AM ish and end around 11PM ish.

Some heavyweight pro-bodybuilders actually get up in the middle of the night just to down some protein, so they don't end up fasting the full 8 hours they are unconscious.

I once shared a plane flight with Markus Ruhl. As expected, the instant they turned off the 'seatbelt' sign, he was pulling out a tupperware of chicken, veggies and rice from his carry-on. And this was only a 90 minute flight!

Everyone is different and unique, but eating within your caloric needs at any time of day should not pose a problem when trying to get lean.

I never eat two hours before sleep. I have heard that other wise every thing goes into fat!

If your over your calorie allotment for the day, possibly.

But there are MANY variations that come into play when your trying to find how/when the body stores fat.

I have a problem with being hungry late at night! Drives me nuts. What are some good things to eat later in the evening that are not so bad for you? I'm sick of cottage cheese! lol

BTW, I don't count calories. I never really understood this and how to know what I need. Is it based on age? Weight? etc? When you lift weights you build muscle and get heavier. So the scale and BMI is misleading to me. Maybe it's not wise to not count calories but I really don't know where to start with doing that. When you workout/lift weights you burn so many calories how do you know? You know? :sad2:

Well everyone's body is going to respond differently to everything. So for some people it might not be a great idea. That being said, I think the reason so many people are against eating at night is because it's usually "snacking", which is often synonymous with bad foods. Also, it often leads to going over your daily caloric intake. So if either one of those things is occurring, then yes, it's bad to do. However, if it's part of a balanced diet and you aren't going over your daily needs, there's nothing wrong with eating late. As has been previously said, it's actually good to eat some slow digesting food before bed.

Case in point: eat healthy and don't go over your calories and time won't be an issue

From my understanding eating late at night really only applies if you are on a normal schedule, like up at 6 or 7 and bed before 10. The reason being is as you sleep you burn calories and as you sleep your body also burns your blood sugar. If you eat before bed chances are you'll have excess that gets stored as fat.

That's why it's suggested to work out in the morning BEFORE you eat so your body is already low on blood sugar and you burn the remainder with exercise and once it's all gone you can start burning stored fat.

Or at least this what I've read.

i usually have a peanut butter sandwich and or a bowl of cereal on a good day just a protein shake
