Sport eating and muscle gain

Sport Fitness
I am a bit confused - I keep reading about how people need to "diet off the fat" after they bulk up muscles. Do you have to eat heavier foods in order to build up muscle properly? Because I usually eat standard indian things - cooked vegetables, pulses, flat bread, white rice- and I don't consider any of that as unhealthy so I generally eat as much as I want regardless whether I'm working out, and it doesn't seem to add much fat. Would I get better results if I ate meat and protien shakes or something?

What do you mean by heavier foods? Do you mean fatty foods? In that case, the answer is no, not really. However, when bulking up it is kinda difficult to monitor everything you eat to ensure that you are eating the right amounts of protein, carbs, and fat. So, people usually go overboard. Then you need to diet to reduce bodyfat. No big deal, thats just the way it goes.

You probably need to add more protein to your diet. The rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein for each pound of bodyweight. If you can get about that much protein from food alone, there is no need for protein shakes. Meat is very heavy in proteins, but if you are a vegetarian, you can still get protein from other sources. Most people I know drink protein shakes simply because they cannot eat that much protein every day.

well i don't ever really "moniter" what i eat anyway. Not vegitarian its just that my mama doesn't cook meat that often :) I'll probably get really fat when I go to college and she isn't around to do that.

How do I know how many grams of protien I'm getting from something?

Read the labels ^^

-Roughly 100g of most meats has between 20 and 30g of protein.
-A Chicken breast has roughly 30g
-Tin of tuna has around 30g
-100g peanuts - roughly 30g
-500ml semi-skimmed milk - almost 20g

Just rough guidelines :D

The latest T-nation article explains that 2g protein per 1lb of body weight minimum!!!!!!
