Dumbells and Ankle Weights

hey guys i have a chance to go buy some dumbells and ankle weights i dont know how many lbs should i buy like 8 lb dumbells or something, the ankle weights are to help me with cross country and the dumbells are so i can get stronger oh and im only 14 so yeah thx for helping
 
ankle weights = avoid. they won't do anything to help cross country, and will likely make your knees ache.
if you wanted to do better in cross country, a weighted vest is a better idea. ankle weights just add weight to the lower legs which stresses the knees. a weighted vest adds total body weight, so if you train with it, you should be able to run 'easier' when you run meets without the vest.

Ankle weights while running = SUXOR on your knees. Ankle weights throughout the day I don't see much problem with though. I used to wear them during workouts and throughout the day just for whatever reason. I liked doing that and didn't notice any knee troubles.
 
so what do ankle weights benefit for your body then?
