Sport drinking too much water?

is there such a thing as drinking too much water? i know hydration is important, but is there a point where it becomes too much?
 
yes, you can drink too much water, causing an imbalance in electrolytes in the body.

however this is typically only possible by drinking over 2 gallons of water in under 1 hour...ie. you have to try to do it actually do it.

sometimes it happens when you sweat too much, and lose electrolytes, creating a lesser imbalance. this usually results in feeling ill and you stop what you're doing....but this is a prime example of when gatorade IS better than water, since it replenishes electrolytes. its just too bad its full of sugar too.

hikers will take a little bag of table salt with them, and take a pinch every so often, so they don't sweat out too much sodium.
 
It's possible. Two young guys died in a frat hazing ritual last year when they were forced to drink five gallons.
