Sport Drinking the night of working out

Sport Fitness
I became a member of the knights of columbus last night so I celebrated with a few drinks.

Earlier in the day I had eaten protein, workout out legs and had another protein shake.

Usually doing that I don't get sore the next day, but I notice on the nights that I drink after a workout I am ALWAYS sore.

Does a workout get ruined from the drinking? Do the muscles have trouble repairing?

What one puts in their mouth, and/or how much of it, does matter. In brief, (and this of course depends on the person, and how much); alcohol is a dehydrator (which means it removes water from the body). Water is a carrier and catalyst of many physiological/biological necessities within our bodies.

Muscle is "primarily" water (with contents), and not protein, like most people think. Combine these: Dehydration action of excess alcohol, the muscle being primarily water, and the uptake of water can be inhibited/decreased/severely depressed. It follows to a degree, that if water is inhibited (in very excessive amounts of alcohol), the uptake of nutrients necessary for recovery can be inhibited or at least effect the persons peak efficiency for recovery. Additionally, while the body can multitask, (again alcohol in excess) many organs (liver, kidney, etc, etc) are preoccupied in dealing with a potential poison, which it could have been pre-occupied in giving you more "peaked" recovery (keeping things equal).

In other words, yes, alcohol can and will effect recover ability--even IF protein consumption is up to snuff. It is NOT "only" protein that "assists", "aids" recovery. It will not entirely ruin it, but you aren't doing yourself any recover ability favors drinking alcohol........ in severe excess.

Peace.......

garbage in, garbage out. Yes the alcohol does inhibit muscle recovery. It doesn't negate your workout, but it does stunt your progress, especially the more alcohol consumed.

thanks guys i appreciate it, i will make sure never to drink again after a day of working out.

btw chillen, i replied to our post we were working on and I sent you 2 emails, you never responded, is everything cool?

I apologize, yes, everything is cool. I will re-check my e-mail, and re-visit your thread. Sometimes, I respond to a lot of threads, get busy with another, and sometimes just plain forget where I left off with some of them; not intentional.

Peace and much success,

Just take a good hard look at your lifestyle, and where you put your health and fitness plans within: Your personal "want v. need-or-meter", and "importance-o-meter".

Sit yourself down (several times if necessary, or indefinitely or without end), and make some decisions on how "important" your health and fitness are; most people have to make some concessions, and sacrifices to reach there goal. Some do it. Some don't. This alone can make or break whether they will or will not achieve their personal goal.

Like with most things we put in our mouth, "moderation" is the key feature. For example, a "small amount" of alcohol once or twice per week, can actually be beneficial to the right person. I say right person, because I wouldn't potentially say this to, say, an Alcoholic or one with some severe alcoholism complications.

Alcohol is a "funny" liquid when "consumed in excess", when seen in terms of biological functions. It is one of very few liquids, that is averagely consumed, that get absorbed nearly immediately through the stomach wall within seconds after consumption. The reason I know (a bit) about alcohol, is I am was a DARE officer, and police officer for many years, and have spent some time in various classes for various professional subject matter. I am not totally against it if used smartly. However, it is one that can sneak up and bite ya ass. :)

Peace,

Very interesting stuff Chillen, thank you for that information.

Don't worry about the alcohol thing for me because I only drink if there is a reason. I mean if all my friends are out having a good time then I will drink with them but that's is ONCE every TWO WEEKS at most.

I'm a lot more concious of my calorie intake now though after you made me see how much I was actually eating and for the most part I would go days without ever feeling the slightest hunger pains. So now I make an effort to try not to eat or snake unless I FEEL hungry.

In the areas of Lifting and Eating I think I am doing very well. Although I am aware that a lot of tweaking still needs to be made. There are certain meals I still have a diet pepsi with (like tuna). sometimes I go overboard with pretzels/unsalted sunflower seeds as a late night snack. little things like that

With my Lifting my sched is still in Iso. I don't know if you remember but my whole goal was to lose weight (I will get my old post)

M: Chest
T: Legs
W: Back
TH: Arms
F: Shoulders

I think I'm def starting to see results in strength and size! I do remember though you wanted to put me on a plan that worked out everything in the body at once.

I think if there is anything I am slacking on it's Cardio.

Let me know what you think, thanks chillen!
