Sport Drink water with food?

Sport Fitness
I have to put one thing of my knowledge to rest. I don't remember where I read this, but every time I eat, I apply the concept. The thing I believe makes sense and is what I read is that drinking(even water) while eating is bad, because it does not allow the food to digest properly(or as efficiently). Is this true? It makes sense to me, because the stuff that digests food is like an acid, and if you dilute it with water, is the digesting process affected? It makes sense to me, which is why I apply it, but the problem I always face is when I am thirsty(want to drink something) while I eat, I am not sure if I can/should drink because of this concept. An example is in the morning, when I eat oatmeal with a banana, I would love to drink some water with it to help it "go down", but am not sure if I should. Can anyone back this up? What do you guys do?

Whoever claimed that, its up to them to show evidence that supports it.

If your thirsty while eating, drink water dont be afraid :p

I heard this from a Chinese mate like back in primary school that if your drink water while your eating its bad for you and you should only drink after your finished eating

"Because of the unique chemistry and action of the stomach there are other factors that we can control that affect the ability of the stomach to do its job. One big factor involves drinking. Drinking with a meal should be very limited. The pH of the stomach and the concentration of the digestive enzymes can be negatively affected by drinking with a meal. The result is watering down the acid which will shift the pH and slow down the enzymes rate of work. The overall affect makes the stomach work harder. When the stomach works harder, then the chance of heart burn and other discomfort increases. To add to this problem, we often drink Soda, Pop, or Carbonated beverages with our meals. These drinks contain a strong chemistry of their own. The strong chemistry of these drinks can impact pH with a far greater effect than just plain water. So we magnify the impact of our bad habits even further."

This proves my point. I will try and eat without too much liquid, I will sip water if I must.

I drink a couple of glasses of water with every meal and it never did me any harm. Do you not drink water when you eat calcium?

Hardly an article to trust as entirely true. Im not sure myself but i highly doubt drinking a cup or two of water will effect the digestion of food. I think body has been designed over thousands of years to be able to get past such a trivial obstacle.

Like the article says there is a mucus layer that acts as a base to nuetralize the acid. I doubt water which isnt even a base or at least no where as strong as bicarb would effect anything to much.

even this paragraph isnt right "When the food reaches the stomach it is bathed in acid"
The only part that secretes acid is the fundus of the stomach which is actually at the bottom. So where does this acid claimed come from? the oesophagus :)

But anyway, if you or anyone can provide a PEER reviewed article about this ill happily change my mind ;)

I believe drinking water while you eat actually makes you digest the food more quickly. The more the stomach is full, the faster it moves the food through to make room for more. I was just reading about this somewhere today.

Ridiculous is my first thought. Water aids in digestion in many ways: it keeps fluid moving, it aids in washing food down to the stomach, hydration. It’s like oil and not putting oil in the machine causes it to become crippled. I say keep your fiber contents up, drink plenty of water, and your body will be like clockwork.

Let’s pretend for a moment you are correct that drinking water during meal slows digestion, and drinking water after meals aid in digestion. What value would this bring overall? Unless you are holding waste in your body for weeks at a time, you don’t have to worry about anything. A slow digestion process suggests slow metabolism which means you’re not feeding your body in the first place – something water plays no part of and you need to eat more.

No, I do drink water while I eat. I was just saying that maybe he should just try it and see how it affects him since he's been avoiding it.

OK, yeah I wasn't exactly sure about if its true or not. I guess it is absurd because it DOES aid in digestion(movement of fluids). So yeah, I will drink while I eat since I haven't in a while.

so one craptastic website convinced you that drinking when eating is bad?

so if i put up a website that says its ok to have sex with goats...you'd do that too?

one website doesn't mean ****, especially when it has NO EVIDENCE to support it.
In fact, you apparently didn't read the bottom of Bob's site, where it clearly states:
As always, remember this is MY story, my opinion and it’s a personal experience. Do not take any of this information as medical advice.

Bob admits he doesn't know his own statements are factual.

Show me a MEDICAL JOURNAL that cites research proving sipping 8-16 oz of water during a meal has any effect on stomach pH or digestability, or absorption of nutrients.

Lol Malkore, sex with goats? Naw, I'm good. Well, its not just this site, I've seen it before, and heard it from people. I just put up this site to sort of back up my argument. I just followed it because it made sense to me. If I find a Med. Journal, I'll be sure to post it.
