Sport Dried Fruit Debate

Sport Fitness
I am wondering what y'all think about dried fruit, from a nutrition perspective. I've found that dried fruit (raisins, apricots, pineapple, etc.) is a very convenient and tasty snack, but I'm not sure about the high sugar content. Are the sugars the natural fruit sugars that occur in the fruit's raw form?

Thanks for the help!

You have to check the ingredients. Some brands add sugar, some don't. If it's just the natural sugars go for it as long as you can fit it into your calories and macros(they are generally pretty calorie dense.) Check the packaging; the only ingredient should be the fruit (sometimes a preservative) I eat prunes and dried apricots all the time. If you eat an ounce or 2 of prunes at night it will get your mojo workin' first thing in the morning LOL. Some fruits tend to always have sugars added. I've yet to find dried cherries without added sugar...maybe they are just too tart or something

I love dried pineapples and thought they were nutritious until I looked at the calories and found 140 kcal / very small serving, probably 2 slices. They add a lot of sugar to pineapple. Apricots seem to be better but I don't like them as well.

There is no debate.

Dried (or dehydrated) fruit is good if it leaves its natural sweetness void of any external sugar. The quality and texture can vary dependent upon the brand bought.

Personally, I love Raisins (Grapes), dried Plums, and dried Blueberries.

There are many dried fruits void of external sugar that are quite good dependent upon personal taste. Nothing wrong with having them in the diet. A solid form of natural sugar (Fructose) can be effectively used by the body and can be rather quickly absorbed.

Dried fruit "can" ROCK!

(This "assumes", of course, that one isnt on a carb restricted diet ;) )

Best wishes

I rock with the banana chips with syrup coating mmmmmmmm, not healthy but very tasty.

Yeah check the packaging for added sugar and preservatives, unfortunately you often have to pay more for natural product.

Have you guys tried Larabars? They are very simple fruit and nut bars. They are primarily dates and flavored with different fruits and nuts. No added sugars, no garbage

From their site:

LÄRABAR is a delicious blend of unsweetened fruits, nuts and spices - energy in its purest form. Made from 100% whole food, each flavor contains no more than six ingredients. Pure and simple, just as nature intended.

So it seems like dried fruit is great as long as there are no external sugars... I'm guessing most grocery chains carry dried fruit with a bunch of added sugar. So where can you find the natural stuff with no added sugars? Health food stores?

My favorite dried fruits are raisins, dates, pineapples, and apricots. Hopefully I'll be able to find some natural packages of these!

It just depends on the fruit. Apricots, raisins, prunes in my experience are usually not sweetened because they are naturally sweet.
