I just saw dried bananas at the store for the first time. Just wondering if anyone has tried them. I am not sure if they are a new thing or not, I know I have never seen them, but I normally do not do the shopping. The package says they taste like banana bread. I was in a hurry and had to get to work so I did not look at them closely. Are they any good? Do they contain anything else or just dried bananas? These were not the dried, hard and crunchy chips but whole bananas that were dried like raisins (soft and plyable)

as long as the ingredients list said just bananas - then i think they'd be ok - but since they'r dried -ounce for ounce they'd be higher in calories than straight bananas

some of the dried fruits for reasons I can nver explain list a bunch of different oils and sugar as ingredients...

I would just eat a normal banana, probably cheaper anyways. Banana chips usually have added sugar and oils which really boost the calorie content, so I could only imagine the same for a dried whole banana.

I love love banana chips but unfortunately they are usually lathered in oil and sugar so they're not the healthiest snack. If you could find a healthy brand I'm sure they'd be alright to snack on but just in small portions.

Be Careful!!!!

Banana chips, dried bananas, whatever, all the same really. And yes, if they are JUST dried bananas, should be no problem at all. However, I just recently discovered something shocking which has totally put me off them.

As mal mentioned, often times you will see sugar and oils in the ingredients and we are not sure why.... I know why now and it is especially common with dried fruit from Thailand. Most of the time when you see oil involved it is because the fruit is DEEP-FRIED first then dried!!! OMG!!! Not the sun dried little happy snack I was expecting at all!!! A handfull of those bad boys are worse than a cheeseburger and fries for fat and calories!!! I guess the fruit tastes better if it is fried first then dried. But really, what doesnt taste better deep fried? I saw on aussies biggest loser recently you can even get deep fried mars bars!!!   I guess bananas are harder to dry naturally too, so frying helps to remove some of the excess moisture to get the process started easier.

The sugar is a given, of course a little sugar gets people to buy more and more of the happy food, but if you are seing oil in the ingredients, you can bet they have been fried first. Most dried fruits and veggies from Thailand are deep fried. They love deep frying there..... And it is where a heck of a lot of the exotic fruit imports we eat in CHina and back home come from...

Seriously, these little treaties can be lethal. Do your homework before you start scarfing down these supposed little healthy snacks. If you can find dehydrated or sun dried banana chips you are laughing. I however, never have though I know they must exist. Ever bag I have ever seen or bought,(especially here) have been deep fried first then dried later in an oven. Not cool. You would be better off to buy a food dehydrator and make them yourselves in the long run.

Dried bananas..never heard of them here either...I'd stick to natural bananas though. I like fresh fruits better. But, like everyone said, make sure you check the labels!

Just read the ingredients. If it says banana and only banana it is OK.I also recommend you to check the nutritional value.

the first time i had ever heard of fried candy bars, was on Nigella Lawson's soft porn cooking show in the UK - she did deep fried bounty bars and oh man did they ever look good ;)

they probably are nice, and very sickly, but its the thought of it. i always freeze my choccy, and let it melt in my mouth. dont like warm melty chocolate.slim

This question is kinda related, but what do you guys think about dry meat, specifically like meat jerky.

I know they are high in sodium, but what do you think of them for protein? Its late, I thought I would throw it out (and too lazy to do research). If anything, I will do research tomorrow.

Dried fruit loose a good portion of their nutrients. Frozen and Fresh are the best!
