Doing cardio on same day as workout?

The fitness instructor at the club I joined says I could do cardio after doing some weight training. Don't you risk losing any muscle gain if you do cardio after?

Jason, The short answer is that no, you don't.

When you lift weights, you don't actually gain any muscle. In fact, you lose muscle when you lift weights. During the periods of rest between lifting weights is when you actually gain muscle.

The theory behind doing cardio after weights is that you need the explosive energy in your muscles to do a proper weight workout and that if you do your cardio prior to weights, you won't get a good weight workout. The reverse isn't as true - you can do a cardio workout without the explosive energy that a weigt workout requires. So go ahead and do the weights then do the cardio and force your body to use up the fat stores during the cardio.

No, doing cardio after lifting won't make you lose muscle. If you are trying to significantly increase your strength though, try to limit your cardio a little bit more. Excessive cardio will counter gains in strength.

After you finish lifting is a crucial time for your muscles. After a workout, generally, you should be resting and feeding your muscles to kick off that reperation period. I would not advise you to run after weightlifting unless you really have to or want to. I find most people have better results running the next day, or maybe even waiting a day before doing your cardio. But, if you weightlifting more than 4 times a week I suppose you have no choice.
