Fast food is not necessarily bad, just because it is fast. I believe you can get a salad at most of the fast food places. Nothing wrong with that. Sub sandwiches can be pretty healthy, depending what kind you get and what you put on them.

It is mostly high fat, high calorie, processed food. They have made great strides recently in improving what they serve, but it is still not necessarily good for you. A lot of chains have started adding some other healthy alternatives to the standard burgers and fries such as the salads, and sides of fruit and such.

That being said you can eat it every once in a while and be fine. Just don't make it a regular part of your diet.

Have you ever seen the documentary "Super Size Me". It will open your eyes about fast food. A guy eats nothing but fast food three times a day for 30 days straight. It is a little bit sensationalized and unrealistic but it still makes you think.

Some of the salads at fast food places are less healthy than the burgers. This is because of the dressing (full of fat), and breaded chicken often included with those salads.

Fast food is fine. Get information about what you are eating (like knowing the calories in your food and such) as well as moderation. Super Size Me wasn't really accurate because eating as many calories as he was by eating that food 3 times a day will cause anyone to gain weight and feel sick.

Knowledge and moderation.

Which is why I commented that it is sensationalized and unrealistic.

But it does put certain things in a prospective. If you ate nothing but fruits and veggies for 30 days you aren't going to get those results.

depends. You can still gain weight on veggies and fruits. It is all about caloric intake.

It comes to moderation and knowledge as you said.

Hate to hijack a thread.....can you get fat drinking liquor....for example...a quart of whiskey a day and nothing else except water?

a quart of whiskey and water and no food?

If that is the case, no. You will die of poisoning before you gain weight lol.

If you mean with food, course you can. If you are eating/drinking more calories than you burn then you will gain weight. Be aware that a quart of whiskey is about 15 shots and a shot is roughly 70 calories so you will be drinking about 1050 calories give or take

Interesting, hypothetical (I HOPE) question :)

Well, alcohol has 7 calories/gram, second only to fat at 9 calories/gram. However, only very little of alcohol is actually stored as fat, so that is not the problem. Your liver converts alcohol into a substance called acetate, which is used preferentially by the body for its energy needs. Alcohol prevents your body from using fat for energy.

In addition, alcohol in its pure form contains NO macronutrients (fat/protein/carbohydrate) or micronutrients (vitamins/minerals). So it is indeed the worst form of empty calorie there is.

Be aware that as much as alcohol has 7kcals per gram, its often mixed with sugars and has much more then 7kcals per gram.

Alcohol is an empty calorie your right- causes more damage then many other forms of food, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons: when I go out if I am chosing between a doner kebab or a glass of wine, the glass of wine is much better (and about 950kcals lower!). Alcohol is ok here and there but as a treat, just like other forms of junk food and refined foods.

(Alcohol is a sugar which is a carbohydrate btw- but its high in the sorts of quickly used sugars which boost your blood sugar then have it fall again- this is one reason people get hang-overs- the drop in blood sugar level which would mean you feel nasious the next day, this is a common side effect of low blood sugar. The headache comes from dehydration and the disturbed disorientated feeling comes from the messed up electrolytes).

I was replying to the question above, which stated the person would only drink whiskey and water. However, you are incorrect-alcohol is NOT a sugar or a carbohydrate. That is why it has a different value for calories/gram than carbohydrates do. Perhaps you are thinking of a sugar alcohol, which is not what we are discussing here. Alcohol is its pure form is alcohol, not carbohydrate.

Generally, they aren't really healthy...Fast food usually consists of fats and lots of them. Although some salads are being offered, we wouldn't know if they're still that fresh compared to making it yourself.

According to me fast food is not good for health. It makes you be fat and plummy.
