I don't have articles, like the others who have posted, but I have information from my trainer and my nutritionist. The basic idea is anyone can lose weight simply by making changes to their diet. If you cut your calories just right you will lose weight. One of my friends (a guy who was a big muscle builder guy) ate nothing but big macs at mcdonalds, but he always made sure he burned more calories in a day than he too in from his food. Not the healthiest choice, but it technically does work.
However, if your goal is to not just lose weight but be healthier, you should not only eat a well balanced diet in your caloric intake range, but you should also work out. More muscle burns more calories which means increase in fat loss.
I can be one of many to say that it does work. From diet and exercise I have lost over 50lbs in less than a year. I have 25 to go to hit my goal.
There are other ways people can lose weight (ei surgery) however even with those options diet is very important. I have had friends who have done all the options, (band, staple, bypass) and each one had to make very serious diet changes for the surgeries to work. The ones that had the BEST results worked out on top of their diet changes. the ones who only ate well had some weight loss but not as drastic as my friends that did both. The ones that had surgery and did neither loss weight in the beginning, but put it back on after a few months.
