Sport Do you wash your Lettuce?

Sport Fitness
I've been purchasing Romaine Lettuce in the bags for years and have never washed it since it says it is already pre-washed. However, a friend told me that he still washes it and its important to do so. So do you guys wash your lettuce? And if so how do you wash them?

Wash it!!, Even though it is pre-washed and bagged. You'll never know if anything got stuck behind. Normally with romaine lettuce, I'll soak the head in cold water for about 15-20 seconds. If you're getting the pre-washed, pre-cut romaine lettuce, I'd put it in a strainer and rinse thoroughly for the same amount of time.

I would error on the safe side, and wash it anyway, even it does say pre-washed.

I always wash my lettuce, and usually just use the tap water with the sink spray nozzle.

I wash all of meat as well. It may or may not need it. Either way, taking a few seconds of extra precaution never hurt.

If you get sick (like with food poisoning) you will NOT forget it. It is an awful experience.

If in doubt, wash it, I say. :)

Have a great day, man!

Rock the heck out!

Best regards,

Chillen

But if you wash it you're losing all the extra minerals found in soil and the protein found in bugs! :D

P.S. I'm American and I get it.... :p But I'm a British Citizen too, so am I DQed?

If it makes you feel any better a lizard found in lettuce became a celeb family pet. How does lizard taste? :beer2:

Like chicken I would think... reptiles and birds are actually pretty closely related as far as muscle tissue goes.

I found caterpillars in my corn once... I didn't eat it. If the caterpillars had been just on top of the corn, I would have picked them off, but they had eaten their way at least a solid inch into the corn. At that point... they can keep it.

Speaking of lettuce... I'm going to start preparing salads (throwing in some protein) this week for dinner. Can anyone recommend a good salad dressing that's healthy? I don't like the cream base dressings. Thanks!

Dress the salad yourself, some Extra Virgin, Balsamic vinegar, mustard seeds perhaps and a hint of rock salt. Tastes lovely

Just make sure you wash it in the shower, maybe use some 'Dove' shower wash or something, its a good brand and smells nice. Cant do with a smelly *******

I know Obelix fell into a magic potion bath or something but I didn't think i would meet any humans who fell into a v1agra bath as a baby.... :D

I make my own too, Extra Virgin Olive Oil Balsamic Vinegar, Italian Spice Mix, Fresh Ground Black Pepper, A little Crushed Chiles and Chopped Garlic. That's my Fave.
Sometimes I use cider vinegar instead of balsamic for a different flavor though or if I am adding Pork as my protein as cider vinegar and pork go great together.

Yes, wash your lettuce. No matter what kind of lettuce I buy, I always end up washing away a lot of dirt and bugs, even if the lettuce was pre-washed. I also follow the Alton brown method (love Good Eats). It adds about a week to the fridge life of the lettuce.

1) fill your (cleaned) sink with cold water.
2) tear lettuce into strips
3) soak lettuce in the water for 20 minutes
4) remove lettuce to a salad spinner
5) spin the excess water out
6) lay flat onto paper towels, 3 sheets in length (don't worry about any left over water still on the leaves at this point, it will help keep the lettuce hydrated)
7) roll paper towel with lettuce inside it
8) place rolled lettuce/towel into a large ziplock bag
9) suck out all the air, place in fridge

Soaking the lettuce before had helps to hydrate it, and remove particulate matter. Rolling it in paper towel allows the lettuce to regain some moisture while in the fridge. And removing the air helps with freshness.

I know this sounds a bit involved, but I've had romaine and green leaf lettuce last for up to 2 and a half weeks this way, and still retain it's crispness. Alton Brown is a scientific food god.

Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly to clean pesticide residue.
If it's pre-washed you might want to wash it again for safety, in case someone tampered with the package or something alike.

I eat my salad with no dressing. At first it tasted bland, but after a while i started to like it. Now i like it better that way..lol.
