Do you think this article is right?

Is it right?

I am not sure what you mean by is it right? the results they found you mean?
I have seen some opinions expressed that were negative or opinionated but not necessarily argueable (worth arguing about or all that wrong in one regard).

Generally the info is good and this is a large forum so as the article says the info is more reliable. Does that answers? Kathy

What a completely horrible study. There are to many variables that go into "whos right" and "whos wrong". There is no "right" answer for alot of questions asked or suggestions given. Such as, "what rep range is "best" for weight loss? There is science backing both sides of the argument in this example. Or, is longer duration or higher intensity better for losing weight. So it comes down to the opinion of the persons doing the study who gets a right and wrong tally. If a weight loss forum was a math forum. Than that type of study could be conclusive and correct. But, with so many different opinions and science usually backing both ends of an argument. How do you define who is right and who is wrong?

Trevor/Are these right?

These researchers found 8.6% (34% corrected)of erroneous posting and 6.6% (28%) harmful postings - a very small number and with corrections. They analyzed postings on 18 internet weight loss forums for one month. It is subjective.

I just don't think a study like that can be done without a large margin of error.
How did they find those %. Who did they consult to figure out which post were helpfull, harmfull, correct, and wrong? There is really no way to conclusively say who's right and who's wrong 100% of the time when there is no definitive answers in a lot of situations in these types of forums.

How do you interpret an answer as correct/wrong when there is not a definitive answer. When their are so many variables that need to be noted. What type of questions did they look at? Diet?exercise?More science based?

I would like to see some of the suggestions/answers they considered wrong/correct.

For a study like this to be done properly it would takes years and years of following advice given, advice used, actual proof of successfully used information exactly as given, etc.

Personally I think a study like this would be impossible to land in a small margin of error.

Erroneous and Harmful

Erroneous means in error. It happens, information that is incorrect gets passed on as fact. That is easy to spot when you are knowledgeble. Certain things are know facts others are not.

Harmful in other words the communicator ios passing off information that could be harmful if used and/or they are abusive. Abuse is easy to spot as is bad advice again to those who are knowledgeable and experienced.

It was a simple bit of research which showed these forums to be accurate, friendly and safe. Kathy

It is easy to define a lot of posts as wrong, as new research has shown a lot of the "knowledge" that is passed around gyms is completely incorrect. Sometimes it is not even new research. If they took into account information that is probably wrong but not definitatively proven wrong, then that number would go up.

What I have always wondered is who came up with the 1200 calorie rule. it is everywhere, but I have not seen a study that shows why that number is picked.

I mean if I am an petit woman who should weigh 100 pounds then a 1200 calorie diet is a weight gain diet.

Sorry going off topic

People are in this industry to make money. Not help people, unfortunately.

The fact that most people are looking for instant gratification leads moron-gurus to pitch starvation-type dieting.

It's that simple.

Science is rarely used to back up advice anymore.

Reason being: Most of the people handing the advice don't know the f-ing science. They don't care to know it. And frankly, they don't need to know b/c they are in it for the money and it's easy to sell hopes and dreams to desperate people.

Well said, I don't trust everyone(or anyone ;)) on the internet.

Is that what you call it?

What are your qualifications Steve? I don't mind fat jokes but I don't like mean spirited ridicule.

Tammy, get over yourself. You are reading far too much into things. Steve is one of the nicest guys I know. I have never seen him ridicule a fat person. You need to chill out.

I don't have qualifications. I just go around the web and pick on people.
