No! And I cannot understand those that stand there walking on the machines or riding slowly on the bikes whilst taking the call or texting- but I guess your never going to hear anything from them on here, people like that probably imagine that they are going to get fit/lose weight/etc just by paying the membership fee!

I take it. I use the stop watch from time to time. Also, why be out of reach? If anyone calls between a set I'll answer, say I'm at the gym and that I'll call them back. That way, if there is an emergency, I'll know about it.

I am sometimes on-call at work. During those times I have to take my phone. Normally though I don't take it with.

Never take it. Nobody is important enough to disturb me from my workout. The thing I like most about going to the gym is how my focus is razor sharp and for 1 hours of the day I've got missile lock on a goal, and don't have to worry about anything else. Of course they may be rare occaisions where I am expecting an extremely important call and take with - but I emphasize extremely :)

The person you love the most just died because you didn't pick up and answer when she wanted to know if it was safe to stay in the house even though it smelled like propane.

I agree with Karky here. I bring my phone with me to the gym, but it stays in my locker. I go with the one I love, so I don't have to worry.

On the other hand, I don't hear it in the middle of the night, so I get yelled at about it, but my response is, "What are you doing at 3 in the morning that you need me for? You shouldn't be out at 3am to begin with."

=P

Yes. I take mine in case I get a call and I keep it with me along with keys and such. I sometimes text while on the bike because it keeps my mind of the time and I can last a lot longer on it.

Phones & Workouts

This debate is somewhat perplexing, and I see no need to criticize someone for using their phone at the gym! I actually don't work out at the gym any more -- I do it at home. But I took my phone when I used to go for the reasons already mentioned in other posts here. Also, my husband and I just purchased new Trek roadbikes, so we can't wait for the weather to improve so we can get out and use them! When we do, I will also have my phone along -- with an earpiece.

You are right, there is nothing at all wrong with it.

It does, however, tend to point out how focused you are/how intensely you intend to train. Sometimes, not always.

I do, but I got in the habit of always having it with me while my husband was deployed. I always felt a bit silly running out of the gym class or hopping off the treadmill to take a call, but if everyone knew why they'd understand.

Still keep it with me though. Don't take calls on it unless really important. Will text occassionaly.

Thats understandable- the fact you leave the treadmill or class to take the call and the reasoning behind it.

Its the glossy blonde who stands (does not move or moves very very slowly) whilst on the stepper whilst also reading the adverts of a magazine and taking a gossipy phone call and then ends it with "see you in an hour" only to make her next call 2 minutes later....

Its the same as people who read magazines or type on their blackberry whilst hogging a machine, seriously, I can see the importance of needing to be contactable, but do these people really think they are doing much good if they are working at such a slow rate? and why hog the machines and ruin things for everyone else?

I tend to think, if you have the capacity to read a magazine, chat on the phone or send surplus texts whilst tryingt to work out, then your not working out hard enough- your not doing yourself any justice.

And also they waste their time, few people loooove the gym, most go because they feel they have to or want to get fit/lose weight or simply as they are paying for it and don't want to waste their money. They come to the gym and waste their efforts just to show their faces, thinking they are doing more! Who loses out here?
