Do you believe overeating is an addiction?

I ask this because I believe overeating is an addiction just like alcoholism and other addictions. Do you agree or disagree?

In my case I do. I am not sure that is true for all people with weight problems, but for me it is. And just like any addiction the only cure is to quit. With food it is more complicated because we need to keep eating, we just have to figure out how not to overeat.

Food can become an addiction (like drugs, alcohol, self-injury, etc) when used as a way to cope with emotional problems (to self-medicate).

Source: I have a masters degree in psychology and work with individuals who struggle with mental illness and addiction in an evaluation and treatment facility.

It is true, addiction to food is real. I'm a councelling Psychologist and i have had to deal with several case of such adiction however you can check out several videos on youtube concerning the same topic. I believe you will see some videos that will really help you with that or any strain and stress related to such weight loss and food addiction issues.

Food is naturally something that we are made to get pleasure from. It is one of our first comforting mechanisms, along with physical contact.
There is nothing bad to it unless you have an eating disorder. Restricting yourself works counterproductive in this case.
The only tip is to become more careful and attentive to your body and emotions. Try to:
rest well
get enough sleep
exercise or move moderately (at least 30 min a day)
avoid stress
when doing groceries, select only fresh and natural foods rich in nutrients and fiber.

And if you believe that you have an eating disorder which you cannot handle yourself, it is better to consult a specialist.

it's not really just like others. you don't need alcohol, you don't need tobacco ... you need food.
I agree, ask an alcoholic if just cutting back would work for them, I am pretty sure it would not. But at least I was never arrested for driving while fat...
