Do Periods Affect Weight???

Sorry to you squeamish guys out there. Had to ask.

I've been busting butt at the gym and eating really well, but today I checked the scale and I gained 2 lbs!!!! Not ok. I've been steadily losing since I started, and haven't changed anything. I've even been working out a little extra. The only thing that has changed is I'm having a super-heavy period. Can periods affect weight???

absolutely!

Your period can totally affect your weight loss. More fluid is retained ... and the next thing you know the scale is not your bestfriend.

Trust me, there are some periods that make me feel like I'm retaining the Atlantic Ocean and of course I can gain up to 7 pounds too when I'm menstruating.

It's nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

Yup, fluid retention is one of those nasty PMS symptoms that hits most of us. If you want to avoid getting that bloated feeling (and keep down the water retention), try watching your salt intake around that time of the month. I have found that it makes a huge difference for me if I try to avoid eating especially salty things like crackers, some soups, and other such tempting items. That being said, all of us are different, so it may not work the same for you. But yes, you are not alone!

They are right. I don't weigh at all for 2 weeks at least from the time it starts. Then me don't get depressed or shove junk food down my throat. My weight usually goes up by 8 pounds and only come down a week or two later.

what you might want to do, and it's a little obsessive, but for a month or two it might be helpful to keep track - use a spreadsheet and keep track of your weight on a daily basis - weigh at the same time every day in the same clothes (or nothing) and track where you are in your cycle... you will see apattern emerge and a certain day of your cycle, you will see some weight gain, and that weight goes away a few days later...

Thanks so much. Today is the first day after my girl stuff, so I will start what you suggested, Mal. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was really not happy with that.
