Sport Discussion about eggs

Sport Fitness
Hey guys. I had recently got into a fight with my mother about my egg consumption. To give you the details... Im 17, about 130 pounds, 9 % bf, and quite into weights at the moment. I told my mum that i was eating 4 eggs a day ( 3 whites, 1 with yolk) and she blasted at me for saying how bad it was. We had a fight for about an hour about it. Shes got a doctorate in medicine, and she thinks she knows abit about it, but i can't seem to fatham how 4 eggs a day can potentially harm you. Can anyone clear up this issue for me.

nothing wrong with that :)

hmmm to me the thing is that you should not be eating only eggs. You have to diversify your proteins income eating eggs, meat and fish. Lots of eggs over years may increase LDL (low density lipoprotein) blood rate and thus increase the cardio vascular risk over years... even though you are not fat.

here's some info from alan aragon

here's who he is, underneath "about the founder:

Researchers from Yale recently conducted a study showing that eating eggs every day does not increase levels of bad cholesterol in the blood. In this study, forty-nine healthy adults were fed two eggs or oats every day for 6 weeks, and at the end had their blood cholesterol levels measured. The participants also had their arteries tested for proper functioning, since this is an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. At the end of the 6 weeks, levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and total cholesterol did not increase in those that consumed 2 eggs per day, and the functioning of their arteries was not affected. The researchers concluded that there is still no clear reason that healthy people should limit their egg intake. So go ahead, keep enjoying eggs every day!

harvard said this last year

The April 21st issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reports a study by Hu and colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health which found no relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease in a population of over 117,000 nurses and health professionals followed for eight to fourteen years.

i eat eggs every day... As a matter of a fact, this morning I at an omlet with 3 egg whites, ham, onion, cheese and tomato!

MMM GOOOOOOOODDDDD

Tell your mom she's full of it...

To get back to abear's post

that study lasted 6 weeks, but cholesterol rate variation are to be taken over years and there shall be different groups following people's age since metabolism and body needs vary with time.

Just as if you were showing that tobacco does not increase lung cancer risk after 6 weeks of smoking. Of course it does not, it only does over years.
The problem is that no study so far tried to analyse the matter over years, the only thing is public health statistics, based on a questionnaire to people.

However doubting about the subject I would prefer to diversify my intake :)

as mentioned earlier its better to diversify your intake

id normally take 2 to 3 eggs a day whole including the yolk
if i went more than that id have the same problem as ur having right now ;)

but im dont eat eggsregularly since i just get bored to stick to one diet for too long
so i keep changing meals daily:)

He said that he ate 4 eggs a day, not that he only eats eggs. I consume about the same quantity (4 whites & 1 yolk) at some point during the day. This will either take the form of scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast or perhaps a chicken & broccolli omellete. I also eat 5 other meals a day which include numerous and various foods. Surely thats enough diversification, isn't it?

last year i wanted to up my whole egg intake to about 5 a day. i went talk to my doctor about it and he said with my lifestyle and family history that it would be fine to do that. one year later my blood test results were the same as they'd always been.

in todays paper, there was an piece from the harvard health letter. it was just because eggs were high in cholesterol doesnt mean they raise blood cholesterol. i quote

"that idea has bitten the dust"

it also said the same thing about shrimp.

yeah thanks for the ideas guys, and yeah. I don't just eat 4 eggs a day! thats stupid. I diversify my protein intake including, fish, chicken, almonds and various other food categorys. I eat 2 eggs in the morning and 2 during the afternoon, with a combination of other foods.

what amount of whole eggs should you eat before discarding the yolks? i gather that's where a lot of the fat is.

That's where the fat and cholesterol are.. I'm with LV, Usually around 16 egg whites a day, no yolks because I get my healthy fats from other places.

I have a friend (and no it's not me...it's really a friend) who eats a 6 whole egg omelet every morning...has for the last five years. He gets yearly check ups and has never had an incident of high cholesterol.

Not that I have a study in front of me and this is second hand information but a co-worker was telling me about a burn victim unit in which they feed the patients 12 whole eggs daily and they have never had an incident of high cholesterol.

I go through 6-12 eggs a day and have for the last 2 years on a regular basis and haven't had any problems with high cholesterol.

damn....   i cant imagine eating 5-12 eggs a day... hmm... maybe i should try ehh.. hopefully i wont be farting all day

Show your mom these

This is a good one...scroll to the last sentence

Read the conclusion in this one

Anyway, arguing with your parents isn't always the best idea. I'd print out these links and take them to your mom and kindly ask her if she would read them. Don't take this as a slight against your mom but just because an individual is an MD does not mean they hold a doctorate in nutrition. I had a sports medicine doctor come into the shop today and after shopping for a bit started to try and tell me that creatine was really bad for people.

The other thing is that there is always new research coming out and if an individual is not constantly staying up on a certain subject they may keep holding to past beliefs which are not completely relevant anymore. Anyway, good luck on trying your case...stay calm, don't get mad, and just ask her to look at hte studies/evidence before coming to a conclusion. Besides, if the worst thing that you're eating is eggs, then you're prob okay. :)

A recent article I read in Men's Health suggests that people who eat eggs as part of their breakfast consume fewer calories the rest of the day than those who skip eggs.

Saint Louis University scientists conducted Th study where peope were given one of two breakfasts one included 2 scrambles eggs, 2 slices of toast, and a tablespoon of reduced-calorie fruit spread. Where as in the other meal the people had a bagel, 2 tblspns of cream cheese and 3 ounces of non-fat yogurt. Even though the breakfasts were equal in calories, the egg eaters consumed 264 less calories by the end of the day. The researcher feel that the eggs higher protein and fat content may lead to greater satiety.
