I am sure this has been done before but what is the story with the diet soda and weightloss thing?

I keep getting bits of articles that it is no good for dieters?

Help me out guys.

My experience tells me it won't keep you from losing weight.

I have consumed diet Coke for decades. Drank it when I was thin, drank it when I was fat.

I've lost 97 pounds while continuing to drink it.

It's not great for you, but it won't keep you from losing weight.

I find that it makes me, personally, more hungry after I've drunk a diet soda.

I will be feeling not hungry, then drink diet coke, and feel like I need to eat an entire fast food joint.

I've stopped drinking them because of this. They're full of chemicals, but people have been drinking diet sodas for years, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I quit the habit. Its truly an addiciton, and its become expensive too! I opt for water mostly. or tea.

i drink diet or zero because it has 0 calories.
a normal can has 200 calories.

Weight loss is all about calories in vs out and that 200 calories id much rather have elsewhere! :)

i never drank it much to begin with due to the fact that my mom never bought it when i was growing up. if she did buy it, it was for 'special occasions' or holidays. i'm not even a big fan of pop from a can or bottle either...however, mcdonald's fountain drink coke is really good compared to anywhere else. so sometimes if i'm craving something sweet, i drive thru and get one and that's my 'dessert.' otherwise, it's water and green tea for me. :)

^Exactly :coolgleamA:

You might hold on to extra water weight because of the sodium, but who cares? You're trying to lose fat, not water. Plus, the water weight you retain from the sodium will flush out on its own.

But it might be cancer-causing. The verdict is still out on if sugar substitutes can/do cause cancer. But what doesn't these days?

Exactly. I was dieing already of obesity. In fact i think i probbly wouldnt have had more than 10 years in me the way i was going. Its not like im a fizzy drink junkie.
Theres no proof that any diet drink causes cancer, however there is a proven relation between obesity and heart attacks !

Most of my clients find they're able to lose weight easier by avoiding sodas.

Sure, the "diet" sodas are better than regular, but they do still have plenty in them that aren't good for you.

I'd look for a more filling snack to indulge in before a soda!

I used to drink diet soda like they were water. I quit drinking them way before I started losing weight, just because it was ridiculous how much I was drinking them.

It's all about personal choice. Since it is 0 calories it will hardly effect your diet wise.

But I find water to be very yummy. And when I have a taste for something other than water then I drink Crystal Light.

The short answer is that if you're not counting calories and just relying on hunger and other bodily signs to tell you how much to eat, diet sodas can throw things off - the sweetness tells your brain you should have gotten calories, and if you're in a deficit, the brain might decide that sweet foods = less calories. (I am greatly paraphrasing).

Of course, there's also evidence to suggest that any other caloric beverage than milk doesn't make you feel more 'full' either, so regular sodas can add calories without satiety.

Personally, I'd go with milk, water or diet soda - but YMMV. If you have a hard time controlling your hunger while drinking soda - diet or otherwise - stop it. Otherwise... well, you can worry about cancer I guess ;)
