hey every1,

I am following a high protein, low carb which is 40% of my total calorie intake and low fat diet. Also counting calories and try to balance it thruout the day.

Few days ago some fren told me that a high protein diet may help me in losing weight but then its hard on my liver and kidneys in the long run. I dunno if its true...can sum1 help? I am a female, 5'3 ht.

Secondly, therez another problem that I am facing. I feel am never full! All the time hungry. Even after finishing my lunch/dinner I feel like eating little bit of this and that. Just trying self control to help me. I do not know if this happens just to me or does it happen wid anybody else also??

How many calories are you consuming?

And are you saying that your carb intake is 40% of your total cals?

How much protein are we talking?

And more than likely, your friend is wrong. Unless you're taking inordinate amounts of protein or you have pre-existing contraindications associated with liver/kidney function... you'll be fine.

Secondly, therez another problem that I am facing. I feel am never full! All the time hungry. Even after finishing my lunch/dinner I feel like eating little bit of this and that. Just trying self control to help me. I do not know if this happens just to me or does it happen wid anybody else also??

Again, how many cals are you eating?

More importantly, what and when are you eating?

What Steve said ... the questions you ask can't be answered w/out more info.

Also, I'd be very leery of "a friend told me" unless you know your friend is knowledgeable and informed. If a friend tells you something, then ask her or him where she got the information and why she or he thinks it's correct.

Generally people tend to repeat thigns they "read somewhere" because it sounds good to them, but they don't really know for sure if what they read is accurate or not.

I am consuming around 1500 Cals per day. Out of which fat is 10% in the form of almonds. 40% I try to keep Carbs in the form of fruits and veggies and some breads. Rest is all protein .Since am a vegetarian I eat cottage cheese and lentils.

Some days ago, I started eating 1500 Cals keeping protein and fat low. Since carbs give a high satiety feeling I was concentrating only on carbs but within my 1500 Cals/day. I dint lose much weight in those 15 days.

So am back to my high protein, low carb diet and also roughly counting it to be 1500. fats r just 10gm of almonds (100Cals approx), and 1-2tsp of oil thruout day

This is roughly what I eat

Breakfast
coffee with 1 tsp sugar
2 slice of bread (50gm)
little soyabeans or baked beans

Lunch
2 slices of bread(50gm)
fruits liek papaya or apple
veggies lots of it
lentils 1 small cup

evening
coffee
biscuits or some snack

Dinner
2 bread (50gm)
veggies
fruits
soyabeans bakebeans etc
milk- 250ml

Can it be some other problem dat am eating so much still not feeling full lol However i exercise a lot of self control and so far have lost 37kgs (81lbs)

60-70gm of protein in a day is alright? My current weight is 83kgs. 5'3" female. I take 2 meals out in a week. I just want to clear my doubts of consuming high protein. I am not taking any shakes or pills which brings me to my another question.

Someone suggested me meal replacement powder. Is it alright if I use it for 3months or so?Is it safe to replace one meal with a shake.

@Kara
Yes, I understand my friend could be very much wrong , hence I posted it here to check the authenticity of the information:)

I'm not sure what you mean by 'meal replacement' shakes, but I'm a big fan of protein powder (Whey protein isolate specifically). Personally I like to get plain whey powder and mix in frozen fruit & water to make smoothies, but as long as you're not getting anything weird in the 'extras' it's no different than having a lean chicken breast or fat free cottage cheese or soy milk.

If you're still feeling hungry, you may want to look into 2 things - more fiber, and more healthy fat. Both of them help you feel more full, and both help keep your blood sugar from spiking & crashing.

If you're eating bread, go for sprouted grains, or high fiber bread. The lentils are a great choice. Make sure to get leafy green veggies and not just starchy vegetables like peas, potatoes, carrots etc. Throw in avocados - loaded with healthy fats as well as fiber, and good for you.

I also throw in inulin (a slightly sweet extract from jeruselem artichokes) to my protein smoothies because it adds a touch of sweetness, but it's also a fiber that can help with blood sugar. I also sometimes toss in psyillium powder for extra fiber, but I'm a fiber fanatic. :p

ok let me be more specific..However, I do not know if am calculating it correctly

Proteins---

150g of lentils Cals are 500 approx Protein 35gm
250ml milk(skim) 100 Cals Protein 8 gm

so 35 +8= 43gm of protein and Cals 600....

ok upto now??

Fats----

10gm almonds 100Cals aprrox

So I am left with 1500- 700= 800 Cals

Carbs------

Fruits
1 Apple 150gm Cals 100 approx
Papaya 200gm Cals 80

Veggies 200 Cals altogether (Cucumber, tomatoes, onion and cabbage)

So now am left with 400 Cals for my breads/grains

My protein is just 43 gm....its low I know. How Shall I increase it further? But then if I lower my carbs then following a diet without grains is like so difficult.

Ummm any suggestions are welcome

Why not log your food on and it will work out your protein for you. All that you need to do is enter the food that you have (with weight).

Most people would not consider the levels of protein that you are talking about as being a high protein diet at all.

The RDA works out at something like 1g for every 2 pounds of weight and if a person does a lot of exercise it is recommended to do more like 1g for every pound of lean body weight.

At 60g to 70g you are not even getting the inadequate RDA.

When you get your protein up to a decent level you will not feel so hungry.

I am also 5ft3...
I am copy/pasting this out of my diary on ANOTHER DIET FORUM where I evaluated my food for yesterday when my protein happened to be high. My diet cannot be balanced because I am under doctor's instructions to keep my fats low - but it may give you inspiration as to things that you could do to increase your protein...

My food/drink for the day was
2 * 120g Shape "fat free" yoghurts - these contain a small amt of fat but are labelled fat free...

1 portion of lightly dusted seeded plaice fillet
frylight
tin of baked beans

312g pork loin steak (grilled)
tin of baked beans
frylight

2 pieces s/f gum
126g sugar free sweets
2 litres of water
some diet cola (not sure how much)

capsules omega-3 oil, starflower oil, (oils so recorded on fitday)
other supplements: centrum performance multivitamin, 1000mg vit C, zinc, garlic, echinacea (currently fighting germs)

Fitday calculated this as being:
1667 calories (happy range claimed up front as 1450 to 1750)
alcohol 0
protein 133.7
fibre 52.2
fat 16% i.e. sat 6.8g, poly 2.7g, mono 5.5g
carb 54%
protein 31%
calcium 1005.7mg
sodium 2306.0

calorie balance was 2093/1667 which makes sense since I am in the upper part of my range and would actually at this time of year be delighted to lose up to 4.5 pounds...

So my sodium was just slightly over recommendation - but in the blurry zone that I am ok with...
I was happy with the 31/54/16 nutrient split
I am under doctors instruction to keep my fats on the low side and they are predominantly healthy fats...
At weight 127.5 - protein RDA comes in as 64g
At last reading my %bodyfat was 21.7%
(100-21.7) = 78.3% * 127.5 = 99.83 pounds = my lean body weight.
Therefore my protein level was actually 34g above the recommendation.

My two cents drink LOTS of water, it will help your paranoia about protein and the kidneys.

OR

You could drink lots of green tea. It will help with the hunger pangs, and will actually speed up your metabolism in the process.

@Omega

ya tnx a lot for replying. thrz still little dillema that if I increase my protein further, I will have to lower the carbs(breads etc) to maintain the Calories. Difficult to follow. But anyways I will try it out...thanks for d help:)

@rock
