Sport Diet changes

I wasn't sure if I should post here or in weight loss, so mods please move if needed :)

Ok, so over the past 15 years I have kept a horrible diet. For several years I didn't eat any meal but dinner and recently started to get better about eating several times a day rather then only 2 or 3 times. I also noticed that I wasn't eating near the minimal amount of calories I should be to lose weight let alone maintain my weight.

My question is, as I start to eat the proper amount of calories, should I expect my weight to go up initially before stablizing and then going down or should I expect to lose once I am eating the correct amount of clean calories to lose weight? Any input or comments is appreciated.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Avraham,

Most likely, your body won't really know what to do with the food at first. If you've basically been eating 1 meal a day for the last 15 years, your weight will definitely go up at first. Your body is probably in survival mode 24/7 if you're not even getting your daily calories.

But once that happens, and your weight goes up, your body will start to learn that it doesn't need to take in so much and store it. So at that point, your should increase, and you'll start to burn more calories, which means you'll start to lose some weight, eventually..

Be ready to gain a few pounds, and you'll be happy when you get to the end result!

Hopefully the excercise I am doing will compensate for that.

To clear things up, it wasn't 1 meal a day for 15 years, that was just for several of them. Over probaby the past 5 or 6 years I have been eating 2 to 3 meals with a snack in there (these weren't very healthy meals though). I am now trying to get to the point of eating 6 small meals and increase my calories to a healthy amount.

well, I am a bit confused....lol :D

are you saying you have not eaten enough for years? but you want to lose weight?

ok, let me try this again. Lets forget about the stuff I said where I was eating 1 meal a day for several years because that was a while ago

I haven't eaten healthy for several years. I ate way too much each day and it wasn't a healthy diet. I started to eat better and tracking my calories and realized I am not coming close to the daily minimum I should be taking in. I am still overweight from eating poorly and now that I am under the calories I assume my body is retaining fat to keep me from starving. My question is, as I increase my calories back up to where they should be with a healthy diet...will I initially gain from the increase in calories and how long will it take to balance out where I will be able to reduce weight while still eating the increased calories.

Hopefully that is more clear or makes more sense or maybe I am just an idiot :) If that doesn't make sense, everyone can just ignore the post and I will let you all know what happens ;)

ok, for how long were you eating healthy before you realized you weren't getting enough calories for a healthy diet? and are your calculations with a deficit?

Are you feeling hungry during the day, like you're not getting enough to eat?

If you were/are in fact in starvation due to the major deficit, then yes, you might see a slight increase in the beginning, but don't worry. Keep at it and things will stabilize and you will effectively start to lose again.

your weight will deffinetly go up for a week or 2 but after that you will be going down. as long as the calories are clean you should have problem with taking a few lbs off a week after eating healthy for a little while. make sure you still have some carbs and still have some of your fats so your body will still work and opperate properly

Answer A is a few weeks/months it has been much better and more healthy.
Answer B is yes, according to the calorie calculations, I was eating less then I needed to for extreme weight loss.

No, I do not feel hungry during the day and now that I am eating more I feel extremely full all the time, but still am in a deficit from where I should be, but am increasing the calories to get to a correct level. I can't imagine how much food I will be eating when I get there...I have to make myself eat now :)

My suggestion....do it slowly. Increase your food intake over a period of time. If you are *not* feeling hungry, tired, or depleted from your food intake, then I think you can work your way back to the correct caloric intake, and be fine.

You may gain some, but I don't think you will gain much (if any) if you are keeping your diet clean, and continuing to workout regularly.

Clean foods, tend not to have as many calories as the crap. Hence the increase in your food intake. BUT you shouldn't eat till you feel extremely full either (that's just a personal view). You body knows what you need. Eat and eat well, As you workout and and are eating clean, your body will let you know what you need.

Just my opinion......

I appreciate everyone's feedback.

I am hoping to get my diet hammered out and fixed in the next few weeks...figure at least I am taking steps now which is better then not taking them at all

exactly....

It's all a process, and it takes a bit of time to evolve :D

Definitely! New Rules of Lifting one of the first rules is "Do something." :D

Well, has your weight gone up or what?

I am trying not to weigh myself to frequently, but last I checked I hadn't gone up or down...hopefully I am replacing fat with muscle :)

That very well could be. When I first started my journal, I was trying to lose fat. I did however want more muscle as well. So I recalculated my numbers because I hadn't been working out and got started.

I ate clean and at maintenance, and I could see the shape of my body changing. It was changing enough that my hubby and a few other people who knew me said something about it.

I weighted myself, but I weighted *exactly* the same. Thing was we took pics and measurements when I started so my hubby took some more pics, and measurements and it was really apparent that I had gained muscle (wider lats, better definition in my arms) and lost some fat, (lost a couple of inches! some in the waist, some in the rear...lol)

I eventually lost most of it (still have a couple of lbs...they are always the hardest!)

So, if I were you, I would still focus on eating clean, bringing your caloric intake where it needs to be, and just keep working out. It always takes time, and hey, it's a life time thing to keep yourself healthy, so no rush eh? :D

Hopefully :)
