Desperately need advice/tips to start working out

Hey guys, I'm male, 27 years old, 5'9" and about 165 lbs. I have access to a bowflex because my roommate has one. I have never worked out a day in my life, don't have much knowledge on fitness, don't go jogging or anything, basically nothing. I am also looking towards signing up for a local gym soon as I have friends who go constantly and I believe that will help motivate me. I recently finished college and I now have the time to exercise a lot.

I do not want to become skinny, I used to be 110 pounds in high school! I want to gain a lot of muscle and become very confident.

What advice do you guys have? What type of workouts should I do? Routine? Do I work out only on Monday/wed/Fri like some friends do? ANY tips will help.
 
Research some stuff on the internet, about how many reps/sets, what type of exercises to do etc.
