desperate for some help...

This is going to be a hard one for me to admit, so no judgement please. I've been overweight my entire life, and I haven't done a whole lot to try and fix it. Currently I weigh 220 pounds. My goal weight is between 160 and 165. I'm 5'10" and a 23 year old female, if that helps at all. I've also had health problems fairly recently, but not the kind you may think.

Recently I had a cancer scare...I had a (large) mass on my thyroid and I never knew about it until my doctor found it and diagnosed it. Because the way the cells on the tumor looked, I wouldn't know if it was cancerous until I had it removed. Thankfully, after all was said and done, the tumor ended up being benign, and I got to keep half of my thyroid. On the down side, having only half of a thyroid makes my levels off. I was told that it will be much harder for me to lose weight even with medication because my body can't regulate everything normally. So it's especially difficult-and depressing- for me to try and do it. I've tried everything, and I even go to the gym five to six times a week. I don't (at the moment) have a time frame that I would like to lose the weight, I just need to get started, then hopefully it'll get the ball rolling.

I don't have the best motivation and sometimes I really don't try. But I'm at the point where when I go to the store I can't wear certain things because of the way I look, I'm done with making excuses. But I need some help. I don't know what's best for workouts or what to eat or how often to eat. I know every person is different, but there's got to be someone with some advice that can actually help me..

-Eat plain healthy foods that don't have added fat, sugar or salt (that's pretty much anything that looks like it came off a tree or grew out of the ground or off a fish or skinny cow).
-Eat less than you need to eat to maintain your weight.
-Do some exercise. Anything, like walking around the block or climbing up and down stairs.

Try and stick with it, you'll feel better for it i guarantee you.

You're so right Jenny. I already take between 5,000 and 15,000 steps a day (depending on when I'm at my serving job or how long I go to the gym) I eat a lot of fresh food and try and stay away from stuff that's bad. But sometimes it's hard. Especially with me working as much as I do it's hard not to just grab fast food. But I've not eaten McDonalds in over a year which is a HUGE accomplishment for me. It's really hard sometimes. I'm really hard on myself too which makes it way more difficult for me to want to do it. My problem is I don't know how many calories I should eat or what specific exercises I should do at the gym. Or how long to even be at the gym for. Like is an hour enough or should I stay for longer, like an hour and a half or two hours. It's a mixture of everything that seems super overwhelming.

I am beyond sorry to hear that! But you have to look on the bright side of it and use that as your motivation. I am here to help. You mentioned you go to the gym several times a week so that seems to not be working. What kind of workouts are you doing? How hard are you pushing yourself? Diet does matter but if certain food affect your body in a certain way then you're going to have to cut them out completely. Lay off any sugary drinks or foods, and lean more towards the fish and chicken. Meal prep yourself for the week and plan out your workouts for each day of the week. (That's if you're that dedicated). Have a written plan of how you're going to tackle it all. I can help give you motivation you need but you need to get it yourself. Once you see a little bit of improvement and little bit of progress, that turns into motivation and brings the whole brigade. Tomorrow is a new day. Everything you want to be is possible, you just have to find a way to make it happen. We aren't born to be mediocre, we are born to be great. The moment you realize you're capable and worthy of greatness, is the moment you succeed. Visit

Brandon I eat a lot of healthy foods right now as it is. I very rarely drink pop and if I do it's a sip here and there while at my serving job, which is only once a week. The problem that I have with meal prep is that I live with my parents and sister still. So they always take stuff because they don't even ask or just don't realize that it's not theirs. I also don't want to eat the same thing everyday, but if I need to I will. For cardio I do the stairclimber and the treadmill. Depending on which day it is, I'll do arms, legs, and abs, but I alternate the day's between the three. It's stressful that I'm weighing in more than my boyfriend is at the moment and that is a brutal reality that I can't seem to get over.

I used to have that same problem with my own brother when he lived me! Maybe you can buy some cheaper foods in bulk and cook once you buy it and then hide it in the fridge. Lol but just a thought. To be honest it gets boring eating the same thing over and over I am not going to lie but there's ways around that. Add spices to your meals so its not so bland. But all in all if you want to be where you want to be, you will have to do what you got to do to get there and that's to alter your diet. (Mostly your calorie intake) As for your workouts, you seem to be doing enough cardio but might not be going to intense on your muscle workouts. How many reps and sets are you doing for each muscle group? Do you drink any protein at the moment? I understand and the stress from all this actually makes you more depressed and actually makes you gain weight. You need to turn all that negativity into motivation and get it! :) Keep it up friend!

I do ten reps three times each, most of the time with increasing weight unless my muscles are killing me. I don't drink protein just because that could make the weight gaining worse since I'm not losing it at the moment. It's really difficult for me sometimes...well...most of the time. I'm having a hard time knowing what to do too.

Hello,
I found what really works for weight loss is combining resistance exercises and cardio focused (metabolic) exercises together in the same workout. For instance 10 x bench press immediately followed by 10 x bent over rows immediately followed by 45 - 60 seconds on the cross trainer. Take a minute or two to recover then repeat 1 - 2 more times depending on fitness level etc. Pick another two resistance exercises focusing on two different muscle groups and another cardio focused exercise and repeat the process. For instance 10 x squats, 10 x hamstring curls then 45 - 60 seconds on the cross trainer / exercise bike etc.... I hope this makes sense.

It does make sense. Thanks for the input! I did a lot of circuit stuff when I played volleyball in college. So I understand what you mean. It's going to be a little hard to do at the gym, but I can figure something out. Thanks!!
