Day One: Pre-Game

I'm here to document the 10,000 steps I plan to take everyday* for the next three months** in my hometown, Los Angeles, CA. I heard about this new book blah blah and decided, hey, what the heck, I need to lose some weight. I love my three times a week Yoga practice, and don't mind waking up early, but the thought of waking up early to do anything more taxing than some sun salutations and hand stands does not make my socks roll up and down.

I am fully one of those people who has the obligatory gym membership (when you arrive in LA they might as well hand them out), pays for it every month, and goes... once... right around the time the bill is collected. Even this visit is motivated out of some guilty conscience about paying for a service I don't use but really need (all the baking my boyfriend and I do is catching up-- fast). But, walking... I do that every day. I can do that, listen to my iPod, and not deal with the body issues that float around in the air at LA's gyms.

I'll be specific, I need to lose 5-10 lbs in about 5 months (my goal weight: a healthy, lean 135 lbs, currently I'm somewhere in the lower to mid 140s).

This, I feel, is not an unrealistic goal. The unrealistic part of me thinks I can walk the 5 miles from my apt. to work at least 3-5 times per week. I plan to alternate mornings and afternoons, driving one way and leaving the car either at the office or at my apartment. If I get super motivated, I might even start taking the bus-- and be one of those LA people who says "oh, traffic? Ha... I don't even drive."

So, wish me luck. Today at 6 PM I start the 5 mile trek back to my apartment. My goal is to be home by 7:30. That puts me at a solid 3 miles an hour. If I can keep up a good clip, I might just make it. If not, I'll pass out on Hollywood Blvd, slip into a boba tea place, and call my boyfriend to pick me up. It will also mean I'll be the laughing stock of the office-- as I've talked a bunch of smack about how I'm going to start walking a few times a week blah blah blah...

I will refrain from closing with any sayings about "one step at a time."

I'm also planning to document my trip to a leaner me here:

The fine print:
* Please note, this does not include days I see my therapist, days I go to Yoga, or days when I'm in the throws of PMS cramps.
** Please also note, it gets f'ing hot in LA and I can't promise this plan will last through the summer.
