Cycling

I had my first day at gym earlier in the week but at the moment am trying to sort out a ****ed up sleeping pattern before I go there again.

I think I will be getting a bike fairly soon, so I was wondering how often is good for you on a bike and if giving the bike a rest is advisable [similar to resting from gym for a day to recover]?

Generally, the more the better. Early on you will probably need a rest day, but after that you can ride every day. Some top triathletes ride 200+ miles / week and competitive cyclists ride 300+ miles / week.

I spin several days a week. In the beginning your bottom may need a "rest" more than anything else - but it's cardio and can be done every day if that is your goal.

Many true "cyclists" do a light ride as a recovery instead of taking the entire day off - more of an active recovery.

Not sure what the sleep issue is - but exercise may very well help in that department as well.

Good luck!

Sleep issue can be blamed on a recent break up and me still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing, so irregular sleep pattern has become, well...regular as of late.

Just trying to find out what's advisable really as I enjoy cycling but don't wanna overdo things during the early stages of trying to get fit. ;)

Good luck with the sleep thing! I will tell you that you NEED to do your best to get that straightened out. I had severe sleep apnea for years and it really restricted my life. Actually, I just got surgery to fix it. I know that's nowhere near your problem, but just saying that lack of sleep = miserable. Pick up and move on :D

I'm glad to see that you're trying to figure out the right thing to do. That's always a plus. As they said, something like cycling you can do very often, depending on your abilities. You'll have to just gauge it yourself in the beginning. Start slow, maybe every other day. However, I have found that the recover rides aforementioned actually make me feel better than taking a day off, so consider that.

I shall consider it!
