Hello everyone, first post here. I would appreciate some understanding of CC rules which, seem to vary. My 11 year old son just completed a 2 km run for his school against other schools. He was 1 of only 2 boys from his school so, a team of 2. He had been training this past summer with a goal of placing top 20 to move onto the next competition. We understood top 20 will proceed. He placed 19th and we and his Coaches were thrilled.
We were then advised he and a few others would not continue on because another school with 4 runners was deemed to have the first place team. Two of their runners placed higher than top 15 while the other 2 placed 30th and 40th. The 30th and 40th place finishers displaced the 19th [my son] and 20th place runners. In another race, another runner placed top 20 with a broken toe and was displaced by a lower placed runner because of the team scoring pulling up lower performers.
I'll be honest - I am not that familiar with the sport and am fuming about this. It seems under-performers are being rewarded. I have read IAAF, NCAA and Olympic rules and all state a team scoring approach but none have a comment about displacing runners because of a "winning team".
It seems as though if a CC team has less than 4 runners then they better place 15 or better or risk being bumped.
Can anyone explain a precedent or logic behind this? Do I understand it correctly because it certainly doesn't seem fair.
Thanks.
