Weight-Loss Critique my diet

Weight-Loss

Hey guys, I just started a new diet to try to help me lose some weight and get more out of my cardio workouts. I also want to let you know that I'm taking Hydroxicut along with my diet in order to help me stick with it. I am trying to switch to 5-6 small meals a day. I feel like I can physically follow this diet and schedule, so I'm just wondering if I have too much or too little of something. I don't want to be sickly or pass out at the gym or anything. Here's my general eating and workout schedule. Also, I'm drinking at least 80oz of water outside of the gym each day. I'm a pretty big guy, 6'1" 240 lbs. I usually have a lot of trouble with portion control, so I'm trying to make that more rigid.

Wakeup 6:00am

Eat an 8oz cup of Lite yogurt, take Hydroxycut and a daily vitamin

Head to gym at 6:30

come home at about 8:30

Eat a bowl of cheerios at 9:00

Eat a sandwich (whole wheat, turkey or tuna, lite miracle whip and spicy brown mustard) at 12pm

Drink a protein shake (I bought a weight loss protein formula thingy from GNC) at 3pm

Dinner salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrot, and turkey or ham, with low fat Italian dressing) at 6pm

Apple with peanut butter at 9pm

10pm is bed time

Am I leaving out anything that I need? or could I cut something out and still be getting enough?

Thanks for the help!

Are you eating the exact same thing everyday, or are you switching it up? You do what works for you, but personally, I wouldn't be able to eat the same things everyday. For me, it's better to have a clear caloric intake goal and follow that (I try to keep my macros at a 40p/30c/30f split, but don't always succeed). This allows me to have things that I'm craving without ruining my diet plan.

Another suggestion, if I may make one, is to leave out the hydroxycut. At 240lbs, you should be able to lose the weight relatively quick with a suitable diet and proper nutrition will give you the energy that you need. There's no miracle cure in hydroxycut; they say you need diet and exercise to meet your goals and that can be done without taking pills.

at 240lbs those calories seem extraordinarily low... not to mention not a lot of fiber or protein from what I'm seeing... I'd strongly suggest keeping track of your calories, even for a short time, in a program like

What are you expecting the protein shake to do for you?
What does your workout consist of?

I'd also second - losing the pills

I'm wondering too if a lite yogurt is a good enough breakfast to have right before you head to the gym??

I just got out of the Army a few months back and we always did our PT prior to eating breakfast. I have a big frame, so 240 isn't a lot, but I know I can cut about 30 lbs safely. 240 is about where my body likes to be. My BMI according to online calculators that don't take into account body measurements say my BMI is over 30%, but while I was in the Army, they did measurements to get a more accurate BMI, and mine was down at about 22%. I've already been going to the gym for a month, but I haven't really been watching what I eat, so the weight hasn't gone anywhere. Here's my standard workouts:

Monday: 60 minutes cardio (Elliptical, Stationary Bike, Treadmill or Basketball. I try to keep my heartrate between 130-150 for the duration)
Tuesday: 30 minutes cardio/light leg workout (calf raises, leg press, leg extrensions, squats, not max weight)
Wednesday: 60 minutes cardio
Thursday: 30 minutes cardio/heavy chest/triceps workout
Friday: 60 minutes cardio
Saturday: 30 minutes cardio/heavy back/biceps workout
Sunday: Rest, or some basketball if I get bored.

I've been following that workout for a month, and haven't lost any weight. My weight lifting ability has gone up, so it's probably being countered by muscle, but I feel like the fat isn't going away fast enough.

I'm hoping the protein shake can help fill in some calories that I'm not getting with the rest of the diet. I know the caloric intake is low, I'm wondering what I can add to fill it in.

Also, I'm eating boiled eggs with my sandwich and salad, and I'm eating the yolks, I'm not sure if they are beneficial, but it seems like they are ok, considering I'm not eating a whole lot. I'm also drinking a can of V8 with the sandwich.

Egg yolks have a bunch of cholesterol - I'm not sure if they are good or bad this week - it changes with the wind blowing..

the downside to V8 -is it's super high in sodium... and the low sodium needs a shot or three of vodka to make it taste good...

So, I should turn it into a power lunch? :cheers2:

Yeah, I think one of my major problems was sodium intake. It's one of my main cravings. I'm wondering if I should hit the sauna daily to try to lose maybe some water weight from all the sodium I've been eating forever. Though, I do sweat through my clothes every time I work out, which I feel is enough.

Oh, one other thing I'm thinking about incorporating is plain white rice. I'm not sure if I really need those carbs though.

whole grains are better than white rice... b ut it's not the carbs that ocntribute to weight gain or weight loss...

Look at Quinoa or some other grains instead of white rice... but a little white rice never killed anyone

At the end of day 3, I'm following the diet, but the times are off. I spent over a year in Asia, and I still haven't been able to get my sleep times situated. I have borderline insomnia, and the pressure of the diet isn't helping at all.

As for my hunger issues, I've been following the diet strictly, but yesterday I had a handful of peanuts that were sitting out. Still, I'm not super-hungry. The small meals throughout the day beat the hell out of the old 2 trips to McDonald's/Taco Bell per day.

The nutrition info on the shake tells me it is meant to be more of a meal or snake replacement then a protein shake. There are more carbs then protein in it. IMHO you would be better off getting a high quality whey protein and drinking it right after a workout.

Good Luck with the diet and workouts though.
