hi everyone,

since i have just started going to the gym again, i thought about changing my diet a little bit.

I now take about 45 % of my calories from protein, 35% from fat and 20% from carbohydrates on working out days while when i do cardio (still most of the days in the week), i tend to eat less protein and more carbs.

this is what i would eat daily:

breakfast:

cup of no fat milk

25 blueberries

2 egg whites

snack#1:

20 almonds

lunch:

chicken breast (about 70-100 g)

snack#2:

protein shake (23 grams of protein, 0g of fat and 0g of carbohydrates) when i go to the gym before

or

brown rice with broccoli or some vegetables

dinner:

could vary from pasta in cardio days or fish in gym days.

are there any risks if i don't eat as much carbohydrates?

what do you think about protein shakes? are they good for weight loss?

protein shake = whey protein

Hi bballer!

I am not an expert, but I know some few things.

Here is some of my opinions.

I recommend you DON'T DO that diet.

Mainly because you go to the gym and do cardio and you NEED carbs.

You should consume more carbs at morning and not at evening.

You should consume the necessary energy before the workout, and not after.

The whey protein is good for the muscles. Muscles consumes more fat, so they are good for FAT loss.

Since whey protein is a rapid absortion protein, it is better when consumed soon after gym.

But it won't work well without some carbs.

There are many risks when you don't eat much carbs. Including bad smells.

You can reduce carbs but not too much. I think between 40%~60% should be ok for who is trying to lose weight.

Other think you can do is replace bad carbs(simple carbs, sugar) for good carbs(complex carbs).

Hope that it could help a little.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I have to disagree with Kazuzak that you need more carbs. I am not a nutrition expert either, but I do have a degree in biochemistry, and this is what I know from a cellular level. Your body likes carbs because they are a direct provider of glucose, which is a fast easy way for it to gain energy, but it is more than capable of using other sources for energy (fat.) You're getting more than enough carbs in that diet between the fruit, the rice, the milk, and vegetables. The only thing I would suggest is that it probably needs a little more green, or that you should take a multivitamin. When you are working out you should really be making sure that you are getting in enough iron, potassium, and sodium, that's really the key for the best cellular function and health.

Bad smells are created from lack of carbs because your body ends up breaking up your fatty acids to use as an energy source instead of glucose, the fatty acid contains many of the same functional groups as glucose so your body can use it in a similar way. After this process, your body breaks down the fatty acid and the left over product is acetone, which is released in your breath and urine and yes, has a strong scent.

Good luck :)

Can you specific your height, weight and age....we can only then decide what you calorie requirements are.

By the looks of it, you are trying to go on a high protein and low carb diet. If you are a small frame lady then this should work fine for you, although you should try to get the rice or pasta at lunch rather than supper. Ohh and I AM a nutritionist so...there ;)
