I'm 17 years of age and think I eat way too much fruit.

I ate 2 small apples, a large orange, 3 kiwis and that fruit smoothie.

Do you think this is too much?

I also eat whole grains which I heard can put weight on you if eaten too much.

There really isn't such a thing as too much real fruit. You are 17. You need what they provide as you are growing. Your calorie count doesn't seem high at all. Course you haven't said your weight or height, which are factors.

There's nothing wrong with the amount of fruit you are eating, especially since you are still developing and also because you're not really eating that many calories.

Fruit is a natural food full of nutrients and the like. The only thing would be if you weren't eating enough veggies each day, but even still, you can get a lot of the same nutrients from fruit. I shouldn't need to mention, but I will, that you need many different nutrients each day, all that require a proper balance between fruits, veggies, whole grains, essential fats, and meats (or to be fair, protein sources). So, if you're concerned about not getting certain nutrients from all the fruit you eat, see which ones you are lacking and try to find them in vegetables that would have them. You can easily look up the nutritional value of these foods and find what nutrients are in each.

Also to note, veggies (in general terms) provide a lot more fiber than fruits, and they also (in general terms) contain less sugar. See how fruits and veggies can be used to balance each other out?

But, you could be substituting far worse things for your fruit intake, so I don't think there's much wrong with you eating a variety of fruit. If you want fruit, go for it!

P.S.- you seem to be eating quite healthily, and though I don't know your height, weight (or sex even), I can't imagine 1500-1700 calories a day +exercise + your age being anywhere near overeating. If anything, be sure to give yourself a diet break here and there back to what your maintenance level should be just to make sure your system doesn't adapt to such few calories, causing your low calorie intake to become your new maintenance level (and thus causing you to stall in weight loss, if that is what you're trying to do.)

I also eat whole grains which I heard can put weight on you if eaten too much.

You are actually falling short of the food pyramid guidelines for whole grains, so you are not eating too much. You are also short on vegetables.

Could your diet cause you to gain weight? Well, if you are gaining weight, then it's because of your diet. I'd probably blame the cheese if anything.

You could eat a pizza everyday and lose weight. As long as you are in a caloric deficit you will lose weight, what this means is your body is using more calories than you consume, which is a result of healthy eating styles and exercise. So looking at it from the perspective of "this food makes you fat" is not the wisest thing to do, especially with fruits which are important.

Ryan, why are you tryign to lose weight? You are already at a borderline unhealthy weight for your height. At your age what you're doing to yourself is dangerously unhealthy. You need to be eating far more than you are.

Do some resistance training, up your calories, increase your protein and carbs, and stop looking in the mirror. You have a great choice of foods but you are eating the same amount of calories that a woman who weighs 115-120 and is less than 5'4" tall. You're burnin' muscle!!!! Stop that!

WOW...you're eating way too little, especially for all the activity you're doing. I'm (as well as most everyone here is) curious as to why you want to lose weight?

lol 6'1 and 137 pounds?!

I think this guy needs to direct himself to a psychology help forum...

I was 5'8 and that weight after hitting puberty...I sure as heck didn't feel fat then :S

Ryan - yes it seems you're actually under- eating especially for a growing man. Too little nutrition can cause permanent metabolic damage.

As everyone here has said - check your reasons for wanting to lose weight.

To answer your specific question though: yes your diet is usually the main reason for putting on or losing weight.

Yours seems fine. A very rough estimate for you should be eating around 1800 to 2000 calories on the days you exercise. Although as long as you keep being active and have variety of foods you shouldn't need to think too deeply into this.

I would suggest that you start including protein with each meal and snack. Your breakfast seems very small for such an important meal. Try a fruit and protein and nut shake in the morning instead. It will give you an awesome kick start. You can throw in different fruit or veg as you feel like it. Carrots, apples, spinach, berries - it all works.

But having more protein will feed your muscles, and more muscle means more efficient metabolism. Also try incorporate some weight bearing exercises as opposed to a lot of cardio.

Hope this helps along with all the other good advice here. But you are really not overweight for your height - so you should be thinking of actually putting some muscle on and enjoying life a little )

I think fruits dose not play a great rule in gaining weight as its high content of fibers and are neutral as almost of they has no fats in their content
In your age you need a lot of fruit but not like this amount i think you should minimize your consumption of fruits eating
