ive had constipation issues ever since i can remember. ive been living by eating as much fiber as possible and drink tons of water and exercise alot. i run 4 miles at least once a week and lift almost every other day, and no matter how much fiber i consume i still stay bloated and consitpated. ive even recently been taking a laxative called smooth lav for 3 days now and still no results. my stools are hard and usually only come out in small balls. i just came across this article, not knowing if its credible or not, but he does have many sources at the bottom. it completely goes against what everyone says and says fiber does not help constipation and might even cause it. since i dont know if its credible i will not paste the link on here but if you google "food causing constipation" it will be the first link that pops up. please read this and give me your opinions on the article.

From all my experience, too much fibre can indeed cause constipation.

If I were you, I would check with a doctor though, to make sure that there are no medical problems.

Too much fibre, particular if introduced suddenly into the diet, will cause constipation. However this does not mean that fibre is useless! It is still the best way to improve constipation but it must be introduced slowly and it must be combined with drinking plenty (I mean plenty) of water.

I would definitely suggest seeing your doctor about your constipation. Particularly if you used to be more regular, as a change in bowel habit can be a sign of an underlying health problem and this needs to be addressed. They can also give you advice on where you might have been going wrong.

Try not to use laxatives on a regular basis. They are not intended as a permanent solution to constipation! There are different kinds (for instance: some soften the stool, some increased the speed at which your bowel moves the stool out of your body) and using too many or the wrong type can do more damage than good.

I am not a qualified doctor. Only a qualified doctor can give you advice. Please don't trust things you find via a Google search unless it is a credible website (e.g. NHS, National institute for clinical excellence, World Health Organisation, Mayo Clinic ).

do you think fiber can also help constipation if taken in the right amount?

I read the article.

HOGWASH!

I would stay away from recommendations like that. If you kept looking around that article you would see that it's a site trying to sell you something.

Eating all your meat raw along with a lot of sugar and oil is a good way to become ill...and stay fat.

If the prune juice made you go too much then just drink less.

yea i kinda figured it was considering every single other source says fiber IS good to relieve constipation where as this one guy is saying the exact opposite. right now ive decided to not drink any milk or cheese to see if this helps. im trying to pinpoint the food thats causing it if indeed it is a food thats causing it. do you guys recommend fully ripened bananas to relieve constipation? ive read if their not ripe they cause constipation and if they are fully yellow and ripe it does the exact opposite.

wow i just read a very interesting article that really says fiber is actually bad and causes hardened stools. if you guys google "Constipation Salvation" it will be the first link, take a look and give me you thoughts. im really confused about all this now. it says sugar and chocolate is actually good for constipation?! high fiber bread is bad?! also says apples constipate. i think its pretty much getting at the soft mushy foods help with constipation. would you say this article is hogwash too?

I didn't get a chance to read either of the articles, but I think the best thing to do is ask your doctor. Everybody's condition is different. I suffered from the same problem for almost a year and 2 weeks ago my doctor said my iron was low so ever since I started taking my perscription iron pills, my constipation has completely gone away and now I am regular. This is very awkward because iron pills MAKE people constipated - but this is just an example that everybody's body is different, so asking a doctor who will seek a solution for your particular situation is probably the best thing to do. You owe it to yourself and your body. I hope you find out what is causing your constipation and your situation improves.
