Confused With Distance Treadmill

Hello Everyone,
I am new to dieting and exercise and could use your help.
I purchased a treadmill almost three weeks ago. Ewwww is it fun!!! :D
I need a question answered. My treadmill doesn't tell how many miles.
My daughter says that 4 times around the track is a mile "track showing in window".
My last walk on my treamill said the distance was 1,511...IS THAT IN STEPS??? If so, how many steps is a mile????
Also, My max on walking is 3.3 is that bad for a beginner? I can't seem to walk faster then that with out holding on for dear life. I read that you should not hold on. I need to work on my balance anyway.
I am almost 49 years old. Yesterday was my best day on it. I did 45 min. switching speed and inclines, 4 my highest. I did a distance of 2,166. I don't think I can do that everyday tho.

As far as I know, yes, a lap around the "track" on a treadmill is usually a standard 1/4 mile (1,320 feet). Where the number 1,511 comes from, I could only guess because I don't think many treadmills count distance in feet. If it's a new treadmill look at the manual, if you got it used look up the 1-800 number for the company and request a manual or see if they can answer your question.

Don't worry too much, I think everyone remembers their first couple of workouts on a treadmill... you're just always afraid of falling and jogging feels impossible without the possibility of flying backwards. It'll get better.

To test out the track vs. mile setting try walking at 3 MPH for 20 minutes and see how far the track has gone.

I'm not sure about the 1511 either...

And you are right that you shouldn't hold on. 3.3 is reasonable, and you should go as fast as you feel comfortable. You'll get in the swing of it soon. You'll feel soon that you are more stable without holding on.

Thank you for the reply. I have a new NordicTrack A2250. I read threw the manual, then figured I was getting the numbers of Kilometers...I went into the setting and it say's in English "Miles not Kilometers.
Today I did 42 minutes and the distance say's 2,145. Can anyone tell me what that is?? Is it in steps?

Are you sure it's not a period instead of a comma? A treadmill is not going to know how many steps you took. I would say that it's in miles, with it being a period and not a comma. You said earlier you're doing about 3.3 mph. Well, if you walk for 42 minutes, that's 0.7 of an hour. Multiply 3.3 x 0.7 and you get 2.31, which is very close to your reading if you substituted a comma and got 2.145. You're only looking at a difference of maybe 250 yards, which is completely believable if you didn't go at exactly 42 minutes, or didn't go at exactly 3.3 mph the entire time, or if the treadmill mph reading isn't 100% accurate. Regardless, assuming what you said is correct, it's close enough to consider it being miles, but I really think that's what it is. You said 3.3 was your max anyway, so your normal pace is probably a little slower, which makes even more sense.

Thank You Corndogggy!!!! I don't do exactly 3.3 the entire time. I do less for warm up and then less for cool down. I could actually do a little of 3.4 today. Gosh, am I going to get faster as I do this?
Looks like they are miles. I was disappointed with all that work and only going 2 miles. But I shouldn't even think about that!!!! Even know the scale has not shown a weight loss this week..I sure can feel it!!!
Thanks so much for the help..it was driving me crazy not knowing what it meant.

Corndogggy,
I walked the treadmill today, and found out that all of periods look like coma's on this digital screen. Thanks again for clearing this up for me.
