 Pedometer vs. Truck

This seems like a stupid question to me, but I dont know how to figure it out. I just started running and I have a pedometer that I use. For some weird reason I wanted to test it and make sure that it was correct, so I took my car and drove .5 miles. That to me is half a mile, but when I ran with my pedometer it shows I only ran .25
Is there a reason there are two different readings, besides the obvious.
I ran more than a couple of times i with it.
Just weird. lol

It depends what type of pedo you have. If it is a cheapo that you can't adjust for length of stride they can be off by a whole bunch.

Did you calibrate the pedimeter to your stride length? There should be instructions with it that show how to do that - and if it is not set properly, that could make the distance showing on your pedometer off.

I mentioned that to my bf, the fact that Im 5'7" and how would it be able to tell the difference between me and a midget. lol
Its an el cheapo. Might have to spring for the 2 dollar cart now. lol

We have an el cheapo also. My wife and I walk together and switch on and off who wears the pedo. So although we walk the same route all the time, if she wears it, it's a 3 mile walk, if I wear it, it's a 2.5 mile walk. :) So most of the time we let her wear it so we feel like we worked harder. :11doh:

To adjust your "strides" effectively, what you do is have a starting point. Put a penny down somehwere, then run ten steps, and put another penny down. Measure from the starting penny to the dropping penny to get how my inches you ran. Then simply divide it into 10ths, and you got your strides.

I paid 5 bucks for my pedometer, and it comes with a stride adjustment. I got it from ****'s Sporting Goods. I'm certain yours come with it too.

Also, you said you drove .5 miles to adjust.... that's how I do it. Also, you could use google maps to find your distance. Here's a good site: and simply use a handy tool and you can adjust your runs.

If money is not too tight ($160ish USD), get a Garmin 305 which records your distance, pace, time, etc. very accurately. It also does heart rate.

I went to the website and it says a little over a mile over there and back. Small baby steps for me. I have never been the running type, but when I was able to hit 2 miles on the treadmill, kinda made me think I eventully could go further. Id like to get up to 5 miles. Woo hoo. If you drive by a woman, laying on the side fo the road, thats me dead. lol
