Sport confused - carbs/metabolsim

Sport Fitness
I'm sooo confused!

So I've always eaten a healthy low fat balanced diet - usually 2 portions lean protein/pulses, 6 portions carbs (1 slice bread = 1 portion) and 3 portions of fruit a day.

I ALWAYS have a big breakfast - usually allbran & fruit and don't eat again until 4/5 o'clock.

Now it seems I'm doing it all wrong. I am hearing all the time to cut back on carbs and eat more protein!

I'm only short 5'1 so every ounce shows on me and my hips/thighs are my problem.

The above eating plan allowed me to loose my post baby weight easily, but now the pounds seem to be creeping on, even though I stick to it!

To be honest, I always found if I cut back on the protein even more, I lost more weight!

Please can someone suggest where I am going wrong (I don't want a radical change of eating only lard & black pudding though!)

i think that you are not eating consistantly enough, try eating lttle and often throughought the day. I lost 2 and a half stone of bodyfat using this technique, remember you nead a steady stream of carbs/protien/fats going into ur system all day whether u are active or not. if you body deosent getanything for a few hours it will start to cling onto bodyfat and turn to lean muscle for fuel, resulting in you feeling bigger, you very well may not be putting on any fat, but losing muscle is making you feel like u are puting on extra weight. Just stick to a healthy diet and eat alot more often throughout the day, it should work for you, it did for me!!

Thanks Ed

So if I ate the same calories, but spread it out over the day (say every 2/3 hours) I should notice some difference?

I think I probably consume approx 1000 calories a day and can't see how I could cut back anymore!

It's depressing!

You're probably eatting too FEW of calories, hence why you are hanging ontop the fat because the body need something to metabolize... All you need to 'cut' back on is 500 calories off your resting/basal metabolic rate... and then from there, depending on your current health condition, have about 60% carbs, 20% fat, 20% protein....

You should be feeding your body every 3-4 hours and having at least 4-5 meals per day... so lets say that you should be eatting 1500 calories a day, then you should be having 5, 300 calorie meals a day...

I agree that you are eating too FEW cals. This will slow your metabolism. As a result you will require fewer calories. This slowing of your metabolism is essentially throwing your body into 'starvation mode'. This makes you sluggish and promotes fat storage.

Ok - so this makes sense...

BUT

if I start to eat more calories, won't my body store this too as it's been used to living on my usual calorie intake?

Appreciate your comments - thankyou!

How do I know what my bmr is?

And if it is about 1500 and I want to loose a bit of weight, then 1000 calories would be what I need. So why am I not loosing anything?

It all seems double dutch!

If you take too few calories, you're putting your body into starvation mode... What is your height, weight, age, and how active are you during the day? if you want to do it yourself, go to This will give you a 'guestimate'...

Hi,
1000 calories a day is MUCH to low for any human being! Your body is starving and desperately holding on to every ounce of fat. Your metabolism is in terrible shape. Eating this way is simply detrimental to your health.
Yes you should raise your calories and yes if you raise them quickly you will gain fat. I've helped a lot of women with metabolism recovery programs. I strongly recommend that you don't increase your cals by 200 a week! That will mean some noticable fat gain. Increase by 50 cals every 2 weeks until you get up to a healthy level. Please consult with an experienced trainer or nutrtionist to figure that out, not just a website. Then you may greatly benefit from a calorie cycling program to further boost your metabolism.
If you just be patient over time for your metabolism to recover it will. Then you'll be able to fuel your body with lots of healthy food and still lose fat
I hope that has helped and let me know if I can help more.
Sarah

The first thing is that you haven't mentioned if or how much you exercise. Some sort of physical exercise, whether cardiovascular or weight resistance, should be the cornerstone to any plan to lose weight. Exercise will raise your metabolism and provide an environment where you may not have to cut back that much on how much you eat. A good exercise program with a little moderation in your diet is the best way to stay at a fitter weight.

regarding that BMR website dex, it estimated my daily calorie intake at 3700 a day lol, thats a massive amount to eat. i reckon i consume 2600-2800 per day. not a good estimate for me

That's why I say "guestimate"... what is your height/weight/age? Because what some people do is make their activity level higher than it usually is... :p
