Is commercial peanut butter not good if you are on a diet, as opposed to natural peanut butter? I recongized on the ingredients list that there were hydrogenated vegetable oils in it, and sugar

Hydrogenated vegetable oils and added sugar are not good.

Better to get the kind without these things if one is concerned about artery health and nutrient profile. However, some have claimed that many of the brands of peanut butter are high in aflatoxins (which can increase the risk of liver cancer). Unfortunately, the supposedly lowest in aflatoxin brands are the ones that add hydrogenated vegetable oils and/or sugar to the peanut butter.

There are other legume and nut butters (e.g. soybean, almond, sesame, etc.) that are less prone to aflatoxins and may be available without hydrogenated vegetable oil or added sugar.

Smart Start makes a natural peanut butter that is great! It even has Omega 3's in it. It is still natural, but you don't have to stir it because of the oil. I can't say anything about the aflatoxins, but I seriously would not worry about that.

The hydrogenated oils and sugar are the only main detriment of what I call regular peanut butter.

Try the Smart Start.

Smuckers also makes a natural PB.

the only ingredients you want to see are peanuts, and possibly salt. no sugar, no hydrogenated oil.

Some may disagree but I would leave peanut butter out and chose fish oil supplements.

It depends on what you're using it for. For example, I would not leave out peanut butter and use fish oil supplements if the goal is to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. haha!

I don't know how fish oil = peanut butter. Besides, I don't think it's wise to replace peanut butter with fish oil for any reason, especially if you really want a peanut butter sandwich to begin with.

I guess he's trying to say if you want healthy fat to take fish oils. I would much rather eat fish than take fish oil though.

I just got some natural Smuckers and it is delicious! But the only seperation is something im not used to, I mixed it for quite a while and its still a bit liquidy at the top. But it tastes great, and costs around the same or less as other PBs such as JIF and peter pan.

I have also tried Skippy natural, but i discovered it wasnt so natural after seeing palm oil and sugar on the ingredient list.

I hate the peanut butter with the oil seperation, the taste is different, and after a while when the liquid dries up the peanut butter gets really dry. I prefer my organic PB that is made with organic palm oil :)

I don't care for the texture of the Smuckers (it's gritty-ish), and around here, it's a decent chunk more expensive than the "normal" pb.

I buy a store brand of natural, that is much more smooth textured. It's HEB's Central Market natural (just peanuts). It requires stirring the oil, but is much more smooth than Smuckers, and isn't much more expensive than regular pb.

After several years, I still miss good ol' regular pb. I don't care how long I eat only the natural, or how much healthier it is - I just can't convince myself that it tastes better. lol

mmmm, regular pb with regular grape jelly on white bread......with a big glass of milk.

I got to a deli and they actually put the peanuts in the grinder and it comes out into a lil tub right in front of me. It makes it seems so natural and hard core to me. they do it at the Publics deli.

I looked at that at the store and it includes sugar in the ingredient list, unless i was looking at the wrong kind
