Colds and flu too often

Ive been sick 4 times this winter already and im getting pissed off about it. Ever since i started working at UPS in September it seems like i get sick every month. Its really dusty and dirty there and i touch boxes that many people have handled. Im also working out 3 or 4 times per week on top of this so i may be overdoing it a bit, but this is ridiculous.

I just had the flu 2 weeks ago and i woke up this morning with a stuffed up head and feeling sick. It sucks so bad cuz i have to work hard at work and need to have energy. Also i hate not working out cuz thats pretty much all i do for fun.

Eating more fruits and veggies is obviously something i need to do, but im eating around 5 servings per day as it is and i dont know if i can afford to eat much more.

If anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it. :)

Are you actually getting better between being sick? Are you getting any sun? Are you washing your hands enough? Bad hand to mouth/face habits?

I wash my hands a lot. Dont touch my face too much i dont think, but ill keep an eye on that. I dont get that much sun at the moment cuz its Canada and its Winter, but i go running or walking a couple times per week.

Ad yes im getting better between being sick. I felt perfectly fine all weekend, then woke up this morning not feeling good.

Thanks for the reply.

Hoss, are you thinking about some vitamin D thing with the sun? or some kind of sun energy for positive emotions kind of sun?

And why the name change? Mreik sounded much more.. Norse, viking and cool :D

I only ever get colds when I’m in a calorie deficit, on a strong surplus I seem to have an armour plated immune system so I imagine eating a lot is a good defence. Also, make sure you stay clear of kids, those things are little germ factories, in 8 years of work I’ve had 2 sick days with the exception of the year my daughter started nursery when I took 7 days in one year!

A long term protection strategy is to have lots of sex, people who have frequent sex have fewer colds. Can’t remember where I read that but as it’s what I wanted to hear I treat that information as gospel; just like BJ’s helping prevent prostate cancer and being good for strong nails and hair for the ladies ;)

I have the same issue when i am in calorie deficit diets. If I am on a defecit diet, I try my best to avoid people especially kids. What helps me is eating tons of citrius fruits like oranges and apples.

Im not on a defecit and i eat at least 2 or 3 oranges er day and usually an apple or 2.

The sun promotes TONS of natural 'anti-biotic' type ILs and such, along with Vit. D. Maybe a vitamin D supp is worth a try in the winter?

It's been a brutal cold and flu season this year. I am hardly ever get sick and I am on my 3rd round of it. Seems to last longer and is harder to shake.

I'm officially a doctor of pharmacy, I've got to either watch what I say when it's next to my name, or change my name :jump1: Hence, hoss.

have something to do with people getting flu shots for the last few years. Maybe the viruses (or w/e they are) are getting stronger.

Vitamin D is a good thought, but i have been taking vitamins with 400 iu of vitamin D and drinking lots of milk fortified with it.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I picked up some echinacea to try for a while and im going to try and get more sun and eat more fruits and veggies.

Well you must be contracting it somewhere, whether through contact or non-contact.

Focusing on the contact part, like you said, try not to touch the face i.e your eyes, ears and mouth.

Is your workplace ventilated? or maybe your home? Without recycling the air you breathe the amount of pathogens in the air increase significantly ad has a fun time entering your lungs and bloodstream. Many people think that being cold triggers getting sick, but it's actually the poor ventilation during winter which is the culprit.

arent colds sometimes unavoidable if you get exposed to it?

what I have doing is the peroxide in ear method
even if you dont do it early enough to kill it off it seems to significantly reduce the duration of your cold

I get colds and a stuffed up nose all the time, I have since I was a little kid. but rarely do I get sick with the flu or anything. It's a PITA, but I've gotten used to it. Could be that I work outside a lot and with water/the cold (Automotive detailing), but who knows...

I've tried taking gobs of Vitamin C, drinking stuff loaded with it, nothing helps me personally... however when my colds do kick in hard, Dayquil usually helps me a lot!

Wash your hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer. Get more sleep, aim for at least 8 hours per night. Eat healthy and eat enough. Take extra Vit C. This should help.

When I was a cashier in my teens, I would get terrible Strep Throat all the time. I was so mad about it. I've figured out that it was all the children since they usually pass this.

What I recommend you to do is concentrate on your hands. Carry a portable sanitizer with you, if you aren't already, and just wipe your hands every so often.
