Cold weather running gear

As many of you know I just started running again. I'm actually enjoying it this time since I'm pacing myself better. The problem is that I live in Oklahoma. Temps this time of year are generally in the 30's to low 50's and will get colder as the months progress. What I'm wondering is what type of cold weather gear should I be buying. Keep in mind that I currently am only running right at 3.5 miles on my long runs but plan to increase that gradually to around 10k. Runs during the week will likely be 2-3 miles.

I ran the other night and it was right at 50 degrees. I had on a long sleeve cotton t-shirt and shorts. My legs were OK but my hands and upper body were pretty cool, almost cold throughout the 2.5 mile run. I've looked at the underarmour coldgear but think it might be too much with temps in the upper 40's and lower 50's. So maybe a longsleeve underarmour/nike normal thickness wicking shirt under a t-shirt for moderate temps and then some coldgear as it gets colder? Also I'm thinking about some coldgear tights for when it gets colder. Thoughts?

I am going to the running store this afternoon just to look and see what they have. I'm not in too much of a hurry as I'm going to be able to run on the treadmill at work this week. Next week I'll be back at home and will be running outside.

I have a combination of clothing that I mix up depending on conditions.

- nike (or under armour) compression wear
- long tights or shorts with cycling knee warmers
- gloves of various thickness
- beanies of various thickness
- various running or cycling jackets and vests

I can stay pretty hot in most conditions so I don't normally layer up but I try to keep my knees covered whenever it's 60 or colder.

On a 30 degree day, I'd wear a long sleeve compression shirt, a vest, a beanie, tights, and thick gloves. I'd most likely get hot unless it was windy and I'd remove the beanie and open the vest.

I bought some Nike gear earlier in the year from one of the sporting good stores. It's a little different feeling from Under Armour cold gear. I liked it better. It's a 2 piece leg and top. I've worn it a couple times so far in the year when the temps were in the 40s and it felt really good.

Thanks guys. For starters and to stay cheap right now, I bought a russel athletic underarmour type long sleeve shirt to wear under my t-shirt. I wore it today and it kept me pretty warm and seemed to stop the wind pretty well. I wore a cotton t-shirt over it and was fine and the temp was right around 50 degrees. I'll gradually invest in the warmer weather items in the next couple of months. This stuff can get expensive but I've got to be prepared if I'm going to be running outside.

Any other advice is appreciated. Take care, Greg

P.S. - 3.2 miles in 31 minutes today. Not bad for a fat guy!

The 30s to low 50s ... that's still pretty warm for us canucks :) I see people running when it's -30°C (-22°F) up here, so I think our equipment would make you too hot ;)

Most people wear thicker tights and a couple of layers up top. But we start wearing shorts when it's 40°F, so I'm not sure my advice would help you :D

No doubt my dear, no doubt!!! I'm sure your equipment is top notch though!

I can probably get away with shorts until 40 degrees. It's my upper body and hands that have been getting cold.

That's what makes this place fun. A little semi-adult humor never hurt anyone!

Thanks for the reminder. I haven't checked out the "out of context" thread in quite sometime.
