Sport Coffee/Caffeine making me gain weight?

Sport Fitness
Hi, I posted this on the men's nutrtion forum also.
But figured this could be a non-gender specific nutrition problem and I could
maybe get some advice from some of the females on this forum.

So, I am a coffee addict. Most defnitley.
I drink 7-10 cups/day on average and get the headaches
and feel very sluggish and cranky  if I havent had any by late morning.

So, before everyone jumps in with the "fatty Vanilla creamer and too much sugar" theories.. I generally use 1 teaspoon of sugar and 2%milk or skimPlus milk with my coffee and occasionally substitute a 1/2 sweet n'low instead of the sugar.

I goto the gym like 3-5 times/week depending on my willpower. I have drastically changed my diet in the last 2 years and eat lots of salad and vegetables, diet soda, tons of water, only eat red meat like once a week if that much. I eat fast food about 7 or eight times a year. I barely even drink alcohol anymore, I maybe go out one night a week to a bar.

The thing is I am still gaining weight!

I know I am getting older, I just turned 30. But, I feel like I eat much healthier than many of my friends and exercise more than some of them. The only thing that I really abuse is the coffee. Could I have ruined my metabolism or made it dependent on my caffeine intake?

I searched the web and there is a lot of pro-coffee information (propoganda?) out there. Plus caffeine is used in almost every weight-loss/fat-burner supplement on the market.

I did find this article, which seems pretty in-depth:
Coffee and Weight Loss - Does it Really Play a Role?

I know I defintley abuse it, but I always rationalized it as "There are a lot of much worse things in this world I could be abusing".

Do any of you have any experience with stopping coffee intake or had any similar experience with weight gain or loss?

its NOT the coffee.

list a typical day's food intake, include times, and portion sizes.

it sounds like you've damaged your metabolism by not eating enough to support your gym time.

7-10 cups a day is ridiculous. Even if its not that making you gain the weight thats way too much. Too much of anything is not healthy.

Yah, sorry about that double post.

How much should I be eating?
I've been looking at the posts and it seems I shoould be eating like 4-5 small meals per day.

I am 6' tall, 209 lbs.
I am not crazy built or anything but I have exercised somewhat regularly for most of my life.
I think a lot of it is muscle, a lot of people do not beleive I am 209 lbs, But I do have the gut I am trying to rid myslef of.

Aside from when I workout, I live a mostly sedintary lifestyle.
I do graphic design and so I am on my computer almost every day.

Shouldn't I need to cut back on my food/calorie intake intake as much of my days involve me barely moving anything except my mouse hand?

i soooooooooo feel for you. i'm in graphics too and i know how sometimes, for hours, you just get up for output (if you're in print that is) or a meeting.

I'd say add more cardio to your routine, to make up for not being so active, and yes too much of anything isn't good so cutting back on the coffee is definitely something you wanna look into.

another thing.. caffeine is a diuretic, but in the longterm it can train your body to retain water in adapting to the dehydration cycle. You'll be more prone to bloat, if you aren't already.. i can only guess but you'd know. good luck

no, calories need to be fairly consistent, otherwise your body won't know what to expect, and that will stunt fat loss, or muscle growth...depending on goals.

just because you don't expend the calories today because you didn't workout, doesn't mean your body doesn't need those calories to repair the muscle you damaged yesterday when you DID workout.

Post a typical days menu. Then post your weekly fitness routine. I'd hesitate to say anymore without that info. That much caffeine can harm you. It can cause bloat and water retention. A cup or two a day is max.

The reality is you need to get off it :) Somehow. A friend of mine used to drink 6 cups a day, get headaches if she didn't have it, etc. She had a bad passing out spell and the doctor flat out told her... get rid of the caffeine. She went through grouchy periods and headaches... but she got off it and is fine since.

It is definitely the coffee. Caffeine and coffee destabilize blood sugar and cause refined carb, sugar and fat cravings. Coffee and caffeine use cause stress hormones to be released into the blood which alone makes it a *very* unhealthy drink. The thing is, most people are addicted to it so they will not tell you its bad because they themselves are essentially junkies.

Be careful. Cut down slowly and quit.

Quitting coffee (and caffiene) is very difficult. There have been heroin junkies and former cigarette smokers who've claimed that quitting those drugs were a breeze compared to caffeine and coffee. Coffee (and caffeine) has very powerful effects on mood.

Coffee is a killer.

good luck

bah get off the caffeine..i was addicted and i just one day quit and i had the worst headaches for a couple of days...but now im glad im off of it and i dont touch anything with caffeine in it anymore

On the other hand, caffene has great cognitive effects.

However, the effect is felt most when the background story is good too, ie, nutrition, sleep, etc.

if you drink 10 cups of coffee everyday you'll eat less than your goal intake and that might have slowed your metabolism down. slowly reduce coffee. drink water or diet tea in beginning to help you cut down.
