Sport Cliff Bars

Sport Fitness
I was just wondering how nutritious they really are? I've been using them every once and a while an hour before I hit the gym. But I'm skeptical of all "health" foods now because some really aren't that good for you.

I've started to eat natural yogurt because I read a comment that said there are so many sugars in flavored yogurts that it's more like a dessert...

Anyways, just seeking some insight.

Do you know the nutritional content off hand?

There are so many different types of cliff bars (builders, regular, so one) and flavors but in general i can tell you that they are very high in sugars. Bars should be more of a treat or a last resort because most of them have a pretty high sugar content. However if you do get some there are some that are better than others.

Example: Cookies and cream cliff bar
240 calories
4 fat
47 carbs (21 come from sugars)
10 protein

You want something with a close balanced ratio of carbs to protein and very low sugar.

One of my bars.

Balance Bar Carb well (chocolate fudge) (at most grocery stores)
190 calories
6 fat
23g (1 come from sugar)
14 protein

And still this bar isn't perfect, its got some sat fats, but i mean if its a choice of mcdonalds or a bar when on the run, its much better.

When I eat a cliff bar I have to make sure I eat less carbs than usual that day. I only eat them because when I waitress it's either an energy bar or nothing :( A bar that I recommend that has the best balance I've ever see is PureProtein. Here is the typical pp bar:

fat-5 grams
carbs-19 grams
protein-20 grams

They are tasty as hell too!

What do you mean by natural yogurt? Organic yogurt has a lot of sugars in it too. Just look at the labels if you want to know if something is healthy. The best yogurt you can get is bluebunny and dannons' light n' fit :)

On these bars, such as Pure Protein, that claim to have only 1g of sugar but 15-17 grams of sugar alcohol, is there really a difference between the two in the overall scope of things? I am not a nutritionist by any means, but I would think that one is just as bad as the other.

I don't know if there is a difference. When I eat pp though i do count the sugar alcohol as sugar just to be safe.

Sugar alcohol does not contain as many calories as pure sugar and it doesn't raise insulin levels as much as regular sugar. However it is a regular carb and should be counted as such. Right now it's such a new occurance in the States that some labels don't even list it on their labels.
