"City of God"

Has anyone ever seen this movie?

I just watched this movie the other night and if your into gang movies this is a MUST see!

It's set back in the day in Rio when there was tons of gang violence. It's in subtitles just so you know, but it's def a kick a.s.s. movie!

Never even heard of it.. sounds good tho, sheesh, now i've gotta go rent it..

Thanks lv

Yep. And it's all true, which is a trip. They still make songs about Ze' Pequeno (Little Ze') today. I speak Portuguese, so though I watch it with subtitles, it's still interesting to catch the original inflection.

I haven't seen it, but my buddy loves it. Apparently they have a television series on Sundance or whatever, "City of Men".

Oh man, definitely a good call, for those that haven't seen it go rent it soon, it's pretty intense

I know. The fact that it is true is just mind blowing.

I can't beleive that children where subjected to that way of life.

My hubby's a movie reviewer, so we see TONS of films every year (he sees hundreds). If you guys want some good recommendations for a particular genre, just let me know.

"City of God" is brilliant, and was done by the same director who did "The Constant Gardener". And if you liked "Amores Perros", I liked "Y Tu Mama Tambien" even more (I think both are excellent). :D

******* SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT ******

I'm about to reveal a secret about the end of the movie. Don't read this if you haven't seen it yet!

Ready?

*** THE SPOILER **
I can't beleive that children where subjected to that way of life.
Yeah. And you know those little kids at the end? The ones who killed Ze' (which is short for Jose, by the way. In Portuguese we pronounce it "ZHO-zeh")-

Well, those kids grew up to be the meanest gang in Brazil. They're still around today.

I thought I was the only soul outside Brazil who bought this :D

Great, picked it up on first DVD release for £5 (like $10 ish) in a 'Bargain Bucket'. Was one of the best films I ever saw.

Y Tu Mama Tambien

Great film too.

Couple of other good foreign films, Brother and (mainly if you like Martial Arts) Ong Bak.

City of God rocked though, loved it. Films don't usually engage me to much but I was pised when he died...

definately one of my favorite movies ever, everything about it is brilliant, and it is extremely entertaining the whole time.

Great film. He did all his own stunts - and man, those are some amazing stunts he does, esp. in the chase scene! He trained for 3 years in preparation for that movie.

Ong Bak should have just forgone any form of their "plot" and just had Tony Jaa running around doing his own stuff to techno or something.

When he jumped feet and arms first through that spool of barbed wire I was like "No way!".

Just sat there stunned :)

Thats a good point though, I could quite happily have watched that fight seqeunce in the illegal fighting den for two hours :D
