I'm a sucker for chinese food. I've been fighting the temptation of getting it because Ive been dropping the pounds but I gotta know. What would have the fewest calories on a typical chinese menu? The one by me has a small(4 items) section on their menu for healthy eaters. Its white rice with steamed veg, chicken, scallops, shrimp, or all 4 with no msg. I'm also addicted to wontons and fried scallops. What would be the best option, if there is any, to get?

It's hard to say because chinese food is so different everywhere you go, but there are a few things to think about

Stay away from ANYTHING deep fried :)

Limit the amount of sauces you put on

Limit soy sauce or skip it all together

Stay away from msg & sodium

Stick more with the steamed options rather than fried.

If you are really craving chinese food, I would say have some, but just do it in moderation!

I agree with PLB.

I'd like to add that you should seriously watch your portion size. They literally stuff enough food into those containers that you can feed more than two adults.

I know this is an old thread (apologies for bringing it back up again), but have you tried making your own? There are plenty of Chinese recipes on websites online (my favourite recipe databases are taste.com.au and bbcgoodfood.com)

From the first website mentioned, I searched "low kilojoule" and "Chinese" under advanced search, and came up with 32 recipes. These include (although I'd calculate the calories- or nutritional information to suit your diet- on some of these myself, some of them look a little unrealistic) Chinese fried rice, pork and Asian greens stir fry, Chinese roasted pork with stir-fry vegetables, plum and ginger chicken, chilli jam scallops with Asian greens, Asian pork with wilted Asian greens, Hoisin lamb, and ginger tofu with mushrooms. (For calorie ratings, take the number under "energy", which is in kilojoules, and divide by 4.2- and/ or calculate this on a recipe calorie calculator)

On the second website, I search under "refine your recipe search". Oddly, they don't have a "Chinese" search, although I've made a couple of Chinese foods from that site. But you can search in terms of calorie range (again I'd recommend recalculating that yourself as I find this website to be a little optimistic), "under 200", "200-400", "400-600", "600-800", or "over 800". I've made "Chicken & Mango Stir Fry" and "Beef Stir-Fry with Ginger" that are Chinese-ish from their site.

Hope this helps (you and/ or others who might come across it).

I ate Chinese a couple of weeks ago and I still lost weight. I took half of it home, and stayed within my calories for the day.

I think that as long as you make healthy choices throughout your day, the one little splurge won't hurt. It will also show you that you don't have to deprive yourself of things you love.
