Cardio every day ?

Hi all

Just wanted to check this with you ....

Is it bad to do cardio nearly every day of the week ? Are there any disadvantages to this ?

I do 20 mins on the spin bike Sun to Thursday (with varying degrees of resistance) - and then on Sat and Sun i also do a 10km cycle ride round the local park).
So really i am only getting the friday off.

I am doing no other resistance or weights training. Do i need to mix it up a bit ?
I dont really want to have to visit the gym.

Thanks

Maccabee

You can do cardio every day if you are medically fit.

As long as your body can handle it then it's fine.

Just be sure that your diet is in check as you would not want to lose any lean muscle that you have.

20 minutes?...20 minutes???....it takes me that long to get a good sweat going. If you're less then 65 years old and/or not morbidly obese, you need to get on that for at least 30 minutes, preferably 45 minutes and ideally an hour!

Hell yes you can hit it every day. Wear a heart-rate monitor and use it like a tachometer. Put some music in your ear too, it helps. What's your age, weight, condition? What are you trying to achieve? Ginger or Maryanne?

Ha ha

I know that i am really only a beginner compared to the rest of you but i actually find 20mins on the spin bike enough to get a good sweat and feel good the next day.
I am 42, but prior to the age of 40 i hardly did any exercise at all and i have a sedentary job at work.

Because of time restrictions, 20 mins to half an hour is as much as i can afford. What i am doing is increasing the resistance in that short time rather than just doing high rpms the whole 20 mins. I am trying to build muscle and stamina and general fitness levels.

From all the replies, looks like it is fine to do cardio every day anyway..

thanks

I'm gonna borrow a page from the book of FlyinFree....so you'll have to excuse the obnoxicity ;)

Brother....I'm 43 and about to turn 44. I used to be heavy too. 2-3x per week I hit the gym and:

1-hr spin-class
run 2.25 miles on the treadmill to kill time between classes
1.25-hour spin class
swim 1-mile in the pool

3.5 hours of cardio burning about 2,350 calories. And on alternate days I weight-train for 1.5 hours and mess around on the ellitpical.

What you do today may make some difference, but your body will adapt and in no time it'll barely make a difference. I need you to do more: go longer, go harder, push, push, push.

At some point you have to ask yourself a fundamental question that we all face at some juncture: do you want to dance around your house in tiny underwear and pretend your Madonna AND LOOK GOOD DOING IT?....or are you content to keep wearing those baggy clothes and thinking you're getting the job done with your 20 minutes? Ask yourself this question: what would Paul Hogan do? Yes, another shrimp on the Barby comes to mind, but that's after getting done with your cardio routine.

YES, you can hit your cardio every day. Now get out there, rip it up and report back with bigger numbers...and you know what numbers I'm talking about.

I'm one click away from summoning The Chillen....don't make me go there, cause I'll do it. I swear I'll do it...I'm one click away. :costumed:

What is long and short is relative to the intensity. Now when he says "20 minutes at varying intensity" and that he gets a good sweat from it. This sounds like borderline HIIT to me, and 20 minutes of HIIT is pretty darn good.

I do insane HIIT but only for like 15 minutes. However, people who aren't in shape would probably die from it. :action3:

Keep doing what you feel good with. As long as you're putting it all out there you're doing good.
If there is one thing I've learned from entering into the world of fitness its that all numbers are BS.
Its not the number on your scale, its what you look like in the mirror.
Its not the numbers your watch displays after completing a lap, its turning around and laughing at the guy 20 years younger than you who just finished 2nd'.
Its not the numbers the doctor tells you, its waking up in the morning and yelling "woohoooo" (done that before, honest)

you can do cardio every day, but watch out for being tired, etc. It's easy to overdo it with cardio every day, especially if you do HIIT.
