Carbs after weightlifting

I've heard that there are benefits to having carbs after a workout if you're eating protein supplements such as lifting weights because protein and carbs go together to help build and repair muscles.

What is the official stance on this in the weight training/weight loss community?

Yes, it's often recommended to consume a ratio of 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein for recovery. Your body needs carbs to be able to use the protein. The inverse is true to an extent too, you perform better DURING a workout if you have some protein in your system, even if you're mainly fueling off of carbs.

Some magazine I was reading recently (health, fitness, shape, self, I don't remember) suggested that after a work out -that chocolate milk was a good thing to have because it had both carbs and protein in it...
