Capri's "Journal" Thingy....

Hey all. You've seen my floating around here perhaps, on and off in the weight loss forum. :)

Today I decided to go ahead and post my starting pictures and kind-of lay out, both for myself and others advice, where I am and what I'm doing about it. I can use all the help I can get, hahaha! :)

A Bit of Background:
About 6 months ago I weight roughly 250lbs and I got really really ill (no idea what it was but I'm better now! YAY!) long story short, I was in the hospital for two months and dropped down to around 210 because I wasn't eating.

Shortly after I left the hospital I came to college where I started eating healthier (college food is healthier than what I was eating at home... how sad is that? :yelrotflmao:) and simply by eating and walking around campus (I'm REALLY involved and constantly moving) I lost another 15-18lbs.

I'm a bit iffy on the specific weight loss as I honestly don't care so much about a number as I do how my body looks. Suffice to say I'm sitting at right around 193-195lbs. *As a side note, it makes me smile every time I realize I'm under 200lbs. :) Never thought I'd see that again!* Anyway, while I do look a lot better than I did 6 months ago, I still have a LONG way to go.

So without further adieu:

Clearly it's not a pretty sight!

What I'm Doing About It:
I'm still VERY VERY self conscious (heck, as I type I'm still wondering if I'll have the guts to hit "Submit New Thread").

Currently I don't have a regulated workout, but I do enjoy going for a "run" (jog till I feel like I'm going to die, walk till I can catch my breath, repeat for an hour or so). I also purchased some 8 and 10 pound dumbbells a while ago to keep in my room so I can use them when my roommate is not around.

I do have a ****ty gym on campus but it's also full of ripped jocks working out all the time, and I'd feel really awkward, and probably stop working out all together, if I was working out with them right now. Also, I don't really fit into that jocky mind-set and being an out gay man I'm kind-of pushed out of male group activities most of the time.

As far as diet goes:
I take daily vitamins as well as Omega-3. Sadly meals can be sink or swim for me, breakfast often either consists of a granola bar (not the good kind) as I run late to class, or a breakfast of oatmeal with copped up bananas mixed in and a glass of oj/water. This all assuming I actually get to eat breakfast as sometimes I wake up a bit late. Eek! ;)

Lunch is even worse, normally it's just a granola bar as I'm running to class. Sometimes it's a PB sandwich on whole grain bread, other times it's nothing. (I always eat either breakfast or lunch in a day).

For dinner I try to get either a green apple, orange, banana, or melons (They are chopped up and green... NO idea what they are called...) for a fruit, two glasses of water with lemon in them, and some sort of meat if possible. Sadly, the main meat meals here tend to be under or over cooked to the point that they are nearly inedible to me and they also like to cover them with a lot of sauces and toppings which make them pretty unhealthy. As a result I probably don't have a very nutritionally balanced diet.

I know that I should really be eating more and healthier meals (right now I'm definitely on a carb deficiency as I don't eat a whole lot, so I'm worried that I'm starving my body (and screwing up my metabolism) instead doing anything good for it in the long term. I've been looking for healthier foods at stores to take and mix with things at the dinning hall, but I'm kind-of failing miserably.

Are there any food suggestions people would like to make?
It's also really hard to judge nutrition in a dinning hall where you don't even see the food cooked. Anyone remember those days? Any ideas on ways to eat healthier in college?

Self Motivation:
In honor of g8r80 I decided to post these a picture of myself and my "fat pants." There was a time where they fit me quite snuggly.

First, congrats on getting the nerve to submit new thread.

Second, you are a little soft and have a little bit of body fat, but so do most folks. But nothing that a little proper diet, weight routine and some cardio can't cure quickly!

Finally, get some new pants. It looks like you're wearing the same pants from your bigger days. That will make you feel better all by itself.

Actually I threw out all the pants from my "bigger" days, I've only had these for about three months. >_< they fit a month ago! Damn you weight loss and making me spend more money!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply g8r80! :D

Diet
Today I was horrible with my diet! :bncry:
2 Pieces of Pizza ~ No idea the number of carbs, 800ish I guess?
1 Serving of Thai food (Chicken w/out skin, chopped up veggies, egg, and noodles) ~ 450 carbs.

Obviously I'm still under my daily "limit for carbs", but the nutrition balance is WAAAAAAY off. I feel like I'm borderline anorexic any more. Mind you, I'm not, but I feel like I'm not eating enough, yet I don't want to over eat and gain even more weight! What a weird place to be in.

I'm trying to think of some creative ways to snack during the days without having to haul a lot of stuff around with me. I heard of an organic store about 17 miles from my town, so I may try to go there this weekend and see what there is in the line of healthy, unprocessed foods! :D Woohoo! :D I'm also hoping to go back to the store and look for berries and nuts to snack on.

Workout
I'm still trying to figure out what the hell I should be doing.

Today I tried a basic routine from mixed in with my "own" exercises and it seemed to work out pretty well, especially considering I don't have much equipment. I definitely feel like I've worked out, and I don't even have to leave my dorm room! :D Creativity and using what you have can do some amazing things it seems.

One thing I did learn from this was that I have NO idea about the proper form for a push up. I ended up putting to much strain on my lower back and stopped before I hurt myself.

I also used my dumbbells doing some basic work outs that I've seen online and in videos including bicep curls, dumbbell rows, and things meant to work the triceps as well as some other work outs but I'm not 100% sure what the names are or the muscle it's designed to work (I feel it but, again, am not sure what they are called).

I'm currently using 8lbs weights, and for some exercises I feel like it's not enough while others I feel like it's to heavy. I end up mixing what feels like the concepts behind high weight-low rep, with low weight-high rep exercises. Not that one can ever consider 8lbs high weight, but that's just the level I'm at right now I guess. I can barely do half of exercise 1 compared to the reps of exercise 2.

I'm wondering if it would be better to just stick with the 8lbs weight for a while until my "muscles" sort of balance out and I can do all my exercises with it, and then progress upwards in weight/reps, OR if I should go back to the store and buy lighter weights and try to do more reps on the lower weight and probably end up maintaining the "imbalance" Suggestions? :newangel:

:rolleyes:Thanks for reading!

Diet
I think I did alright for today! :) Lots of food, but healthy!:azzangel:

Breakfast:
-Oatmeal (1 Serving)
-Orange (1)
-Water (2 Cups
-Sausage Links (2, my cheat?)

Lunch:
-Peanut Butter Sandwich on Whole Grain Bread
-Chips (6)

Dinner:
-Orange (1)
-Orange Juice (3 Cups)
-Water (32oz)

Kind-of a weak last meal, but I was feeling a bit ill and took a nap so I missed dinner X_X ack!

I know it wasn't the best day ever, WAY to much o.j. but at least it wasn't coke? ;) haha. I'm going to try to get a wider range of fruits & veggies in my diet as well as some more protein from walnuts/almonds.

Workout
I learned a little something about working out! Don't do a full body in a day!

I woke up this morning and sat up sore from my workout yesterday. My abs are so out of shape it actually hurt to sit up. :boxing_smiley: As I tried to stretch a bit all my muscles were sore to the point I thought it best to just rest. I'm going to try to spit my workouts between upper and lower body in a day from now on so I can try to work out more often.

I assume this is better? I would think that since I'm working them out on alternately days I still get the same benefits but since my heart gets pumping twice instead of once it would ultimately be better.

 Thanks for Reading!

Dont be ashamed to ramble, its your diary, we just read it. :)

Tip~Fullbody workouts are great!

Dont you have a regular supermarket closer then 17 miles? Just go there and buy unprocessed foods. Organic is ok, but no reason to go out of your way.

tony, thanks for the advice! :)

Can you explain why full body workouts are better than targeted ones? Is it better just to workout hard one day then take a day or two until I'm not sore again?

I do have a supermarket a few blocks away but they don't seem to have much in the line of healthy food. Mostly just junk most college kids would buy. :( I'll go back today and see if I can find anything, wish me luck!

hey capri congrats on getting started so far

IMO i think you should look a lot closer at youre diet you`re simple not eating enough.
You should look at the grocery list sticky it`ll help alot.
Definitly you should look into a full body workout concentrating on:

SQUATS
DEADLIFTS
BENCH
ROWS

Good luck with your goals man

"""""Kind-of a weak last meal, but I was feeling a bit ill and took a nap so I missed dinner X_X ack!""""""

I agree with MarkO- you need to eat man, EAT!!! EEEEEEEAAAAAAAATTTTTT! at least a lil something.

I didnt say they were better, I just said they were great. A newb to training should start out with a fullbody to work all the parts as often as possible.

Thanks for the replies all. :) I FINALLY got to the store and loaded up on almonds, raisins, and cranberries. :) Yaaay! I also stole a lot of oatmeal from the dining hall so I can have it for breakfast whenever now.

Also, ty for clarifying the full body workout vs split training. :) Yesterday I tried working out a bit again (even though I was still sore) and about 10 minutes in I loosened up and felt a lot better. :) Woohoo!

Sorry I missed yesterday's post, I'll type it up now.

Edit:

Also, Mark: I'm assuming those workouts need some weights, which I don't really have access to in my college dorm. :) thanks for the advice though!

Capri, Think about trying fitday ( ) . I had the same trouble you are having now. It seemed at first that no matter what I ate, I just couldn't eat enough calories without feeling stuffed all the time. Between fitday and suggestions from members here, I have been able to tweak my diet to get up to and stay within my dietary goals for the day. Knowledge is everything. TRACK, TRACK, TRACK, at least for a little while until you get a good feel for what and how much you should be eating. It looks like you are on the right track. Keep it up, Greg

Roughly 2,100-2,300 calories. Is this a bit better than I've been doing?

Workout
I was a bit sore still, but decided to go ahead and try to workout again. After about 5 or 10 minutes I was actually feeling pretty good. :) I used the following workouts:

(used 8lbs weights)

(minus the feet-on-floor pull ups because I have no where to do them)

I also did a dumbbell rows (, example) with the 8lbs weights as well.

I did each of these two or three times, is that called a set? o_O Not sure

-------------
Sorry this is a bit late. I'm hoping to try and work out again today as I'm feeling pretty good. :) I've eaten pretty healthy today I think. I'll post it all up at the end of the day.

Also, I put up a link to my FitDay account on the first post of this journal. Here's another link to it:

Saturday & Sunday, February 9th & 10th, 2008

Diet:
To much to remember! X_X
- Lots of almonds
- Raisins
- Toasted peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread
- Hot Chocolate
- Honey Dew Melon
- Pasta w/ Meat & Marinara sauce
- small piece of garlic bread (yuk. x_x)
- Ice Cream :)newangel:)

Workout:
Saturday I did end up working out again for about half an hour and then my friend and I decided to go camping on a frozen lake in a state park on the spur of the moment (this being the reason for so much food on Saturday, needed carbs to stay active)

Today we hiked back (carried around 40lbs about 2 miles between today and yesterday) and then we celebrated with the Ice Cream. (*sigh*)

All in all, considering how active I had to be last night, it was a pretty balanced day. I also should mention that the food is for two day, and there are a few things that I'm forgetting I'm sure.

Reply:
Mark: I wasn't aware of that! Thanks. :) I'm still avoiding the gym here though. X_x I know it sounds stupid, but I'm just not comfortable going there yet. Maybe next semester (this summer is going to be filled with a lot of activity! :) Yay lots of hiking/biking trips)

Update:
It's been a while since I updated! This last week was midterms week and so was to busy studying to really get online and post. Lucky for me this week is break so it means a lot of research, working out, and relaxing! Woohoo! :jump1:

I was a bit "bad" last week, I only worked out twice and I didn't have the greatest diet ever (worst part was celebrating the close of our "old" dinning hall ) but this week I went to the store, got a lot of good food to try out, and I also purchased some more/better weights and a bag to keep it all in.

Other than that, not much! I'll try to keep better updates in the future.

Future:
With the new gear I purchased and in my newly cleaned room I'm going to be trying several different things this week to see what works for me and what doesn't. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have established a good workout routine for myself! Wish me luck!
