Canada could ban nutritional supplements and vitamins

This is from on the controversial Canadian bill C51.

Proposed Law said:
So you want to take Vitamin C, how about if it was illegal to take that vitamin C, what if it was so illegal that you could be thrown in jail for up to 2 years and fined up to $5,000,000! Sounds like fiction doesn't it?

Well it's about to become reality unless people become aware of what is going on. The Canadian Government is trying to pass a bill known as Bill C51. This bill has already passed its second reading and it is flying under the radar, it is very close to becoming law and some powers that be DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW! This bill would give entire control of supplements over to drug companies by only allowing MDs to "Prescribe" them as they see fit. Of course we know here in this country the government controls the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies tell the government what laws they want inorder to make more profit. What this means is that if you want to take a multivitamin or some Omega-3, you have to book an appointment with your doctor, go in and try to convince your doctor that you are in need of these supplements. If you doctor doesn't approve or better yet decides a certain drug would be better off for you then you unfortunately won't have access to your supplements anymore.

On top of this the entire natural supplement industry will collapse on itself, thousands of jobs will be lost and even more stress will be placed on our already crumbing over-stressed medical system. Imagine waiting over a month to get in to see your MD just to request if you can take some oregano oil for a cold that has now come and past, only to have your request denied anyway.

The irony of all this is that MDs who are NOT trained in the use of herbs and supplements for the most part will have full control over what you can and CANNOT TAKE. To summarize:

- No More Supplement Stores!

- Supplements are made illegal unless obtained through a prescription and 70% of all current supplements on the market will be removed!

- Prices for obtainable supplements will be higher than they are currently due to the monopolization, and being made into prescriptions!

- Restrict research and development of safe natural alternatives in favor of high risk drugs!

- Punish Canadians with little or no opportunity for protection or recourse for simply speaking about or giving a natural product without the approval of government!

- Fines of up to $5,000,000.00 and/or seek 2 years in jail per incident of being caught breaking any of these newly implemented laws. This includes USING OR SELLING SUPPLEMENTS WITHOUT GOVERNMENT APPROVAL!

Sure supps like vitamin C are misused by a minority but others like fish oil supps and multivitamins are necessary in this day and age of processed foods.

Have you written to Harper?

I do demos for two different supplement companies, and they say they don't think this whole thing is going to go through, realistically. There are too many lodistics involved, and no one in government is going to put in the work. Unless Big Pharma wants to take caer of the legal aspects of drafting the laws and such.

I have noticed that all biotest products are banned in Australia due to the ingredients used in there supplements not being legal here.

This is all about money.

Buying and selling:

End User
^
Retail Vendor
^
Whole Sale Distributor
^
Distributor
^
Manufacturer
^
Raw Materials

By issuing this law, they basically remove everyone in-between the Manufacturer and the End User, therefore increasing profit because they sell direct (or almost).

I'm sure as hell looking into this.

Why are they considering this? What benefits does it give to everyone?

5 MILLION DOLLAR FINE????????????????????????

2 YEARS OF JAIL???????????????????????????

Are they on crackKKK???

Unless this was some kind of April Fools joke, Under Bill C-51 the State could:

Enter private property without a warrant
Take your property at their discretion
Dispose of your property at will
Not reimburse you for your losses
Seize your bank accounts without a warrant
Charge owners shipping and storage charges for seized property
Store your property indefinitely
Levy fines of up to $5,000,000.00 and/or seek 2 years in jail per charge
Will not have to report seizures to a court.
You could be charged just for talking about or promoting natural alternatives.

^^^
All this because you have vitamins/supplements? This is an ordinary citizen we are talking about not a bigtime drug dealer with a Learjet and a private army. This is way overboard.

Vitamin supplements are generally just a way of conning gullible people out of money anyway. There’s little to no research proving their effectiveness other than that carried out by the companies that make them.
Maybe getting MD’s to prescribe them will make the supplement makers more accountable for the quality of their product and the value it actually provides

Why not get around this new law by eating fruit and veg instead? Or is that too much effort for the pill popping generation?

That's an interesting point. I could swear I had read somewhere that even with a good amount of veggies and fruits, it's still hard to get ALL the vital nutrients and vitamins.

Anyways, I still don't think the government has any place deciding what products are good or effective. The whole point of the economy is open competition, and it's up to the buyer to decide what's smart and what's stupid. Caveat emptor!

Yeah, I have to agree with that, although IMO opinion vitamin suppliments on the whole are not needed and the claims they make are exaggerated, I don't see why a government should feel the need to step in like this. It's another example of the nanny state trying to control everything we do

Yeah, I am with you on this. I think just eating right in general, with good fruits and veggies, along with working out is enough for anyone. However, I can get a multivitamin for pretty cheap, so I've gotten in the habit of taking one. Even though all it mostly does is make my pee yellow-green. :D

Typhon, while you make a great point, getting MDs to perscribe them isn't an accountability issue or quality control issue. It's a 'how can we make the government more money by increasing taxes on SOMETHING' issue.

You're probably right about it having something to do with increasing taxes but I'm just trying to see the positive side. There's very little regulation in the suppliments market and having a doctor prescribe a product is likely to weed out the poor products on the market :)

x2! I hate seeing the following 'disclaimer' on EVERY SINGLE SUPPLEMENT EVER INVENTED!!!:

'The following statements HAVE NOT been evaluated by the FDA'

NO SUPPLEMENT has ever been evaluated! WTF are those guys doing?!

When I was working at the health food center, it was amazing how many people were here from Europe that did a ton of shopping because supplements were so regulated due to CODA (what was passed by Canada and the US).

Let's just hope it doesn't get to that point. But it could. Why? Because no one really spoke up. I even remember a thread I made on here about all the forum members contacting their representatives and telling them to vote no on this issue.

That's interesting you should say that Evo...I do most of my shopping in the States because they get yohimbine. A product not allowed in Canada.

It also took FOREVER to get Scivation's "Xtend" - a branched chain amino acid powder - over here.

Funny enough I challenged matt182 to prove his hypothesis that one does not need multivitamins if you eat according to the food pyramid. He did not come up with a 2500 calorie diet that includes all the multivitamins/minerals necessary by the body. Taking into account cooking and modern food processing vital enzymes and nutrients are lost.

Maybe you don't need quite as much as you think you do, people like my nan have never taken a vitamin tablet in there life and she's still going strong at 87

Where are getting the figures for your 'required amounts'?

I think it's quite telling that the country where suppliments are most popular and widespread (US) are also the most unhealthy in the western world. Suppliments are completely unnecessary for a healthy individual with a decent diet

Who eats according to the food pyramid???

mat182's suggestion is that if one ate a balanced diet like that suggested in the food pyramid, he/she would not need multivits. I asked him to provide a balanced diet meal of up to 2500 calories which is the text book RDA for a man with all vitamins, minerals which he didn't. Food being cooked and prepared looses a lot of its nutrients and enzymes.
